Thanks! I probably will start work next week, so had make hay while the sun shines. Enrico Curuso, other then being a great tenor, had one super duper Roman collection...I should have become a singer, maybe not, I have a crappy voice!

You need to squeeze in some coin time during the growing season! Maybe time to train an heir to carry some of the load? :)

I'm tired of teling you how beautiful your coins are. If I say nothing, just assume I'm in the corner, drooling (or slobbering).

Thanks, even with my hectic work season coming up, I let my muscles do the "work" while my "Brain" is thinking of coins/auctions/bids 24/7.
Before i go to bed, I scan the sixbid site for new upcoming auctions, then look at the material...if something catches my eye (if I can AFFORD it) I place a advance bid. Two coins that I have been after for 5 years, no luck are a dated 1495 Frankfurt AV Goldgulden in at least EF/ same for Flanders AV Demi-Noble 1488
Philip the Fair....also France Mouton d'or Jean Le Bon in Mintstate.

Next thing ROMA auction....fingers crossed on three coins!

    I feel bad now!
But I saw a 9 Aurei from Constantius I in coin news past issue from 2008. Man, there are so many nice coins, makes you drool like a Neapolitan Mastiff with a filet mignon steak. Kinda puts me in a mood to go back and work my tail off, to add that dream piece to collection. Seems to get worse as time go on, a real passion to achieve the impossible. I was out pricing some new clients today, best thing was, they never wanted a quote, "word of mouth" works best. This way you do not have to compete with other contractors bids.

Man, you should. You have way too many nice coins. You should be like the socialists and spread the wealth.

Perhaps we should note that the coin was a very unusual listing for CNG. They called the coin FDC but felt the need to headline it as having 'Proof like Fields'. Don't you just hate it when FDC is not enough? It is a great coin. I must admit I still would prefer the several Carausius bronzes in that sale (including the triple portrait and two animal reverses) but, if I were going to buy a coin due to its state of preservation, this Diocletian would do quite nicely.

Very true. CNG is very conservative in their grading standards, lots of coins they list as CH-EF/SUPBERB EF were listed as FDC past auctions. This coin, was in a NFA auction prior with same description. Checking the current ROMA auction, seems their grading is on par with CNG/NFA...which is a good thing. What fascinates me, is that a 1800 year old coin is still looking almost like it was minted in my basement, yesterday.:yack: I have in my pockets a couple of loonies, they were minted 3 yrs ago! They would grade VF. john photos 1 002 (Small).jpg john photos 1 003 (Small).jpg

I hear you on CNG grading. I received a Nero which they graded vf. When I received the coin I was pleasantly surprised that they had under graded the coin imho. Also, the coin was several times better than the CNG photo would lead one to believe.

    BTW-fantastic OP coin.

Thanks, when I got the 4 lots from Adams Triton XIX sale, I too was really happy, with the grading, even their EF looks UNC. A lot of that World material (Adams) which was graded supberb EF would have been slabbed MS-65/66! Thats why Kunker grades EF what was slabbed MS-64, esp. in hammered coinage.

Of the decisions Mr. Vagi made that I believe caused him not to be taken seriously by old timers in the hobby upgrading what we always called EF to AU and MS was most offensive. Certainly putting things in a box that keeps you from seeing them as well was bad but trying to make people think his coins were better than they are was out of line with the 'hobby of gentlemen' generation. If CNG or others can keep inflation out of their terminology, they deserve our thanks.

The problem comes when you try to consign a coin that you would call VF, but I'd say is maybe Fine and not worth auctioning. I break a lot of hearts. :D

EDIT: panzer, that is an absolutely fantastic coin. Definitely one of the best Diocletian aurei I've seen.
