Did some bank hopping and walk away with 5 40% halfs. Not to bad for 5 banks.

Found my first "ender" this week. Box yielded just two silver war nickels but opening it up and seeing one on top means it's not going to be dirty hands for nothing!

Didn't make it there. Huge blizzard hit yesterday and I am stuck in Casper.

Did good on nickels. Everything else was underwhelming...

What is the fascination/interest in pre-60 nickels? Should I be saving them like I save pre-83 pennies for melt value? Thank you.

Everyone needs to decide for themselves, but I think you'll find that most folks here will tell you that pre-60 Jefferson nickels are not worth saving except for War nickels or a few key dates, etc.

Personally, I don't save them, nor do I save pre-1983 (or the 1982's that are the cheaper alloy) for the copper. They take up too much space and the melt/selling price now isn't conducive to saving.

I found two interesting coins , one is a 1980 Dime , and a 1969 S penny ? odd on the penny. Not sure what to make of it. The penny was given to me in Ontario, Ca. last week. The dime I found in Arlington, Va. from my shop-vac that my neighbor borrowed. I told him what I have found , he could care less. Anyways , any feed back is appreciated. Thank you, Dan G.

As @Dougmeister wrote, it really depends on the person and their mindset.

I currently save all pre-1960 nickels as well as pre-1983 cents. I wouldn't have started to do so if they were tying up a significant amount of money or space. However I'm getting to the point where the quantity is adding up. I have recently been contemplating to sort through them and only keep the ones that are of high grade or scarce/rare (which aren't many).

I started saving them for the simple fact that they were already worth more than face and with the hope that maybe some day copper and nickel prices would increase. I am aware that the laws don't currently allow for the melting of coins and that there are costs associated with smelting the metals into pure form which will eat into the premium. The idea is that maybe someday it will be legal to melt the coins and the premium for such metals is greater than all the costs, plus face.

Aside from that there are other uses that they could be used for should the metal value fall flat... like filling out folders or building sets (mini or full). If you want to really get creative you can use them to make art.

Although some may say there is opportunity cost in keeping them sitting around, at least I know I can always turn them in to the bank for face value.

I had been saving pre-83 pennies, and the stash probably peaked at about 40lbs worth, but I've been slowly dumping them back into circulation because I haven't seen much of a market for buying them, and I'll probably be moving in the next year.

As for pre-1960 nickels, I save most of them, throwing back only damaged/heavily circulated common dates. If I want to unload them, I can either cash them in or sell rolls on eBay for a small premium.

The cent just has glue or some other crud stuck to it. The dime, someone just counterstruck it with the numbers. Who knows why.

4 boxes of halves today. 4 boxes of skunks. Oh well, the cents look promising and it leaves me more $$ for the Baltimore coin show on Saturday :)

I toss back the nickels that are worn more than G-4, unless they're low mintage. When my tubes for each year are full, I'll probably toss out the G-4s and just keep the VG+. I just enjoy old nickels. I know that selling them is a pipe dream.

I've never saved pennies for their metal content. I save them like I save nickels, for age and rarity. That's what collectors do.
