Really? I have the 2004 Standard Catalog of World Coins, would it be in there? I haven't seen it before in the Canadian section.
I'm probably going way off base here but why not? First I think ALL of the 1867-1967 coins are stunning. Next for rexesq I have this question. Do you see a lot of Mexican coinage in Arizona? I ask this because I happened upon a lot of it a few years ago. Lots of red 20 centavos and other denominations. Sold it on ebay in small lots and most ended up in the U.S./Mexican border states. Still have a lot left. It just kind of puzzled me as to why people that close to the border were buying from a guy that lives 30 miles from Chicago. Any theories as to why?
Rexesq,it is listed with the 'normal' 1967 $1,that is according to my 1981 Krause.I think you will find it listed in the later editions of Krause. Aidan.
Aidan, I see, I couldn't find it in my 2004 edition. Clembo, as far as mexican coins go, you mean those that are found in circulation right? I have found quite a few mexican 1 nuevo peso coins from the early 1990s in change, they're comprable in size to nickels, even though they are bi-metal, and quite easy to tell apart, you still see them occasionally. As well as several early 1990's 10 centavos, which are similar in size to dimes. I've never found any of the red 20 centavos here, or anything older than the early 1990s in change here in Arizona. I think the exchange rate for nuevo pesos would make 1 nuevo peso worth around .09cents USD. So getting a 1 nuevo peso in change, as a nickel, results in a .04 cent profit. The last time I got a large ammount of change when I was actually in Mexico was probably 1993, and I got loads and loads of the earlier $100, $500 and $1000 peso coins from the 1980s, from before they switched over to nuevo pesos. In 1993 they were using nuevo pesos, but the older high-denomination pesos were still to be found everywhere in circulation. I forget how many old pesos equaled one nuevo peso, but it was quite a few. The exchange rate was quite different than it is now before the nuevo peso, it took huge ammounts of pesos to equal a US dollar, so they had coins with very large denominations, big thick heavy copper-nickel coins. At the coin shop I frequent they have a 25cent bin, and it's bursting with the mexican 1940s copper large 20 centavos, and the high denomination 1980s coinage.
Twiggs, the 'Diving Salmon' variety of the 10c. crops up a lot.I have seen very few 'normal' ones.It is still an interesting variety though. Aidan.
Rare Canadian Coins As rarity gose the large cent is pretty common even though you think the mintages are low. Starting with the penny your collection is not complete without the following: 1891 Large Cent - all varities 1907H Large Cent 1922 Small Cent 1923 Small cent 1925 Small Cent 1949 "A" point to dicimal small cent 1955 NSF Small Cent 1985 PT5 Small Cent 1970 is a low mintage coin for 5 Cent, 10 Cent & 25 cent and are not easy to find anymore in your change. That is if you are in Canada. My favourite coin is a 1953 - 5 cent NSF Near. No shoulder fold with maple leave near the rim. Cheers
Wayne, thanks for that list of varieties & dates.I will be looking through my boss's stock of Canadian 1c. coins. It's amazing what turns up over here in New Zealand. Aidan.
Rarest Canadian coin How about my 1911 50 cents with FULL OBVERSE TITLES? (i.e. with 'DEI GRA:', as on coins from 1912 onwards.) Unique and unlisted. I will be selling it at auction later this year.
Wossip, can you please post some photos of this coin? I know that the Newfoundland 1911 50c. coin has 'DEI GRA:' in the King's title. When was this Canadian coin discovered? Aidan.
I found the 1911 50 cents in a bag in an auction in 1999 in England, with a few dozen other old Canadian coins. Bought the lot for about £75 (US$150). I have tried to put up photos but haven't yet managed. See Canadian Coin News Dec. 2005 (or Jan 2006) for full info.
The 1911 50c. from Canada with the full obverse titles is one that needs to be listed in both Charlton & in Krause. Aidan.
I'm reviving a months-old thread here, but I can add to it: 1901 50 cent 1912 5 cent 1932 10 cent 1933 5 cent 1936 1 dollar What do you think that 1901 50 cent piece is worth?
I live in Texas not really to far from the border. I buy my mexican coin form an antique store in town, It is safer by far. I have been across the border to buy things in the pass, but not now. They do check you at the border before you go across and after you come back.
Quite a bit more as junk silver than its numismatic value. It's ASW is almost 1/3 oz., and Charlton values a G4 at 50¢ and a VG8 at 80¢, in Canadian dollars.
Are you looking at the right one? The Blackbook I have lists it for $125 in Average Fair and some nice examples have sold for > $200 on ebay recently.
