No problem! I just wanted to be sure that I was viewing the coin, the whole coin and nothing but the coin.;);)

I'm in the AU58 camp. There is a lot of rub on the obverse......hair, leaves & cotton bolls.

I would respectfully, and strongly, disagree.... while the photos are certainly less than ideal, what they do show simply doesn't suggest a near gem example. To my eye, the coin has a very "Ch AUish" appearance, although new/better photos could change this.

    And here's a Peace dollar!

This, of course, has nothing to do with the issue at hand or the OP's coin, but neither does posting a photo of a 68+ Morgan.

  5. Lol. I respect all your answers. Glad to know I have an idea now of the grade!

Is there any other way to take better photos b/c I'm using my phone camera @BooksB4Coins

I have a hard time grading these type of coins that look like they were beaten around to me they are circulated and if not they were not taken care of bag marks what ever they are called they are not mint state to me. I have been collecting since 1964 and have a hard time believing the grading companies grade these with high numbers granted the profiles are outstanding but the abuse doesn't make that kind of grade

AU-58/MS-60 there seems to be wear on high points on obverse the reverse looks better.

I cannot honestly say that I've much experience imaging coins with phone cameras, but some are certainly able to get nice results using them. Of course much depends on the phone/camera, but as with actual cameras, a few things that may help are to be sure your phone is as steady as possible then shooting. Depending on the design and lens location, perhaps try to rig the functional equivalent of a tripod (stack of books, small table, whatever works). You also want to get the "right" amount if light onto the coin. I realize this is vague, but you want enough to properly illuminate the coin but not so much that it washes it out. Two lamps positioned at 10 and 2 should make for a decent start, but it's fine to move them when/if you find it beneficial or necessary. Stay close to the coin, but not too close, and be sure the phone is focusing on the coin as opposed to the background. Does your phone, perchance, have a macro setting?

Your photos aren't that bad, so please don't get me wrong. In fact they're a lot better than some we see here, but for the purpose at hand, the better the photo you can post, the better the information you're likely to receive.

MS63, although a lot of MS examples of the 1882-S are struck much better than this over the ear.

They are indeed better, but perhaps I should have mentioned that straight down overhead shots are much preferable to those taken at an angle. My sincerest apologies for this slipping my mind.

With that said, even though I'd still prefer to get a better look, to my eye I can see the coin going lower MS. My apologies for being vague, but long ago I learned the hard way to never be absolute when basing an opinion, on coins in this range, on photos... anyone's photos. No matter how much improved digital photography has become, it simply cannot replace an in-hand examination IMO.

Definatly au58. There are signs of rubbing on the high points which could be friction rubbing but still. Plus the luster is flat and mixed in with the bagmarks I can see scuffs that lean towards circulation. I'd make a $100 gentleman's wager this coin will come back au58 at best. An 82s should have an extreemly strong strike, which this one does as evidenced by the claw which has some rub too but primarily the clearly formed lines in the leaf left of the bow... au58

You certainly could be right, and on a purely technical level I believe you're without a doubt right, but I personally wouldn't be so confident as to bet. Of course I'm not a great fan of gambling such ways, am viewing this on a phone screen, so take as you will.

The only reason I would hesitate to bet is because it's a common coin and will probably be relegated to a YG (young grader) which may not know the nuances of accurately grading an early 80s slider and call it ms61 or 62

    MS61 or possibly AU 55/58

I think the coin looks clean, there is the slightest hint of rub (hence the term slider) across the high points on the obverse. This could be bag marks, lighting - or legitimate wear. This would render a 55/58

As far as MS grade, there is a lot of chatter in the fields on the obverse. Because of this, I'd say 61 to 62. It's a strong strike and very deep, which lends towards a higher grade in my mind. There's a lot of pit/bite marks in the cheek which preclude any higher grade.

An MS60 is a truly pock-marked coin and although uncirculated is really rough looking. I think this - if those aren't really wear marks will go 61 and on a good day 62, but my firm guess is MS61.

The obverse is scuffy, but I don't see enough high point wear to prohibit a low MS grade. Now if those are rub / scuffs in the left obverse field I will agree with AU something.
