I picked this up today. I've been using the search function here and Google. I can't tell what I have, or if I have anything interesting at all. Also there was a V nickel that sold on ebay with the same serial number as mine, is it normal to recycle sample slab serial numbers? I think it is a newer one but on one of the websites some early holders have the same sticker mine has on the bottom.
Also the other ones I've found have NGC, after the grade. Any knowledge that could be shared would be appreciated.
The answer to your question is Yes. Here is the newest resource for Sample Slab collectors http://www.ebay.com/itm/SAMPLE-SLAB...368469?hash=item33b4115b55:g:P8QAAOSw9r1WARq- And that authors site. https://sites.google.com/site/sampleslabbook/ Another source http://www.sampleslabs.com/pcgs.html Note the reuse of slab certification numbers.
NGC has said that they don't but there have been too many examples of samples with duplicate serial numbers seen to believe NGC.
I just decided to look up the certification number and it shows as the V nickel that just sold on ebay. Either way it's an interesting piece to me and outside of what I usually buy. I'm happy with it.
I will point out that if you look up 199998 in NGC's database you will see that it is the Liberty Nickel sample slab (Schwager NGC-005-4-1) David and my auction records indicate that that cert# has sold twice AS a Liberty nickel in the last 2 years Year Serial Grade Paid Date Auction# 1911 199998-024 SAMPLE FA 00 NGC 35.00 8/29/2015 361373013853 1912 199998-024 SAMPLE FA 00 NGC 20.12 2/19/2016 222020588271 Easj3699 - While your sample is very close to S# NGC-050-3-4 with a "PF 66" grade (vs "PF 66 NGC") I would classify it as a new one, NGC-050-3-5 (p)... unfortunately David has closed new submissions for the 2nd edition (2016). Still, with your permission, I'll add it to my running list of proposed for the 3rd edition (2017)
[QUOTE=" Still, with your permission, I'll add it to my running list of proposed for the 3rd edition (2017) By all means you have my permission. Also thank you for more information.
PennyGuy and Burton, thank you for answering questions - looks like I arrived too late to add much. I agree with everything you wrote. On the subject of reused NGC submission numbers, 199998 also appears on two silver Roosevelt samples (NGC-010-3-4 and NGC-010-3-6) and a 1964 Kennedy sample (NGC-050-2-1). Other submission numbers are also used repeatedly. 145534, for example, shows up on five types and 204782 on eight. Although the NGC cert verifier is not completely reliable with sample slabs, it is still a valuable resource. Other certifiers either use dummy numbers (ICG and PCGS), no numbers (ANACS) or do not have cert verification (anything other than the top four graders. The second edition of Sample Slabs is ahead of schedule and I now plan to release it at the World's Fair of Money in Anaheim this August.
In case you are wondering the value, similar 1982 Washington half dollar samples sell for around $50. Thank you for showing us the unlisted type. One of the things I love about samples is that new varieties show up every month.
