http://www.ebay.com/itm/1854-1873-2...603183?hash=item1c63fce82f:g:oY8AAOSwzvlW8hPj Two Quarter Eagles for $330 plus shipping. Would you buy it?
No way. Even if the one hadn't been made into a crude love token, it's still priced significantly above melt.
He will have to sell those locally. Hes figured melt+fees into account, but in a buyers eye, its a 40 dollar premium for melt junk. Im sure someone will buy though.
Is it worth $300 shipped? I asked him if he would cut a deal outside of Ebay and he said that is how much he would need to get for them.
From Small Size, above: As of this morning, latest melt value is $297.52. So, technically, the gold value contained in those coins probably justifies a $300 expenditure. Until we factor the circulation of the 1854 and the horrendous damage done the 1873, both of which have cost the coins some unknown amount of gold weight. And this is relevant, because we're splitting hairs here to try and assign a value to these poor coins. Another relevant factor is, how would you get rid of them when you choose to "cash out?" I'd think the pessimistic responses in this thread so far would be a pretty clear indicator that finding a buyer would be problematic at best.
I was going to try and buy them and hope that their gold weight was still in tact and I could sell them at melt, there are a TON of people on CL in my area buying at scrap, and I think with a small bump in gold I could make a few bucks pretty easily.
