I was doing a little inventory checking. I frequently find errors that I made in recording the coins I purchase as well as attribution errors that came with the coin. This AR Nomos from Campania made my suspected attribution error list since I couldn't find Artemis behind the portrait on the obverse until I used my mag/light... and there was the little guy after all! I never tire of finding added features that missed my initial inspection. I think sometimes I spend too much time "acquiring coins" and not enough time "learning about coins". Please post any coins that has small features that might be missed with a casual inspection or any coin that had a device that you "discovered" after the purchase. Or anything at all. Campania, Neapolis AR Nomos 300-275 BC 18mm, 7.03 gms Head of nymph right; behind Artemis holding 2 torches Man-headed bull walking right; above Nike flying right placing wreath on bull's head; monogram below. SNG ANS 344
The coin below was purchased as a Phillip II and when I tried to attribute it I couldn't nail it down. I couldn't figure out what the device is under the horse and the fine folks here at CoinTalk set me straight! Proteome of lion. The coin is attributed below. Lysimachus, Kingdom of Thrace, BC 323-305 AE, 5g, 17mm; 5h; BC 317-305 Obv.: laureate head of Apollo right Rev.: ΦΙΛΙ[ΠΠΟΥ]; horseman riding right; ΛΥ beneath horse left, lion forepart right (protome of lion) It needs a new photo because it's a wonderful coin.
neat, that's a cool little artemis..i can see how you missed her however. it's a great coin...love man-head-bull! i didn't notice this coin was countermarked until i posted online and looked at my photos.
Gorgeous coin!!! (Especially with the 'little guy') My hidden devices or other missed attributes are still a mystery for me to discover---doubtless I have a few since I should spend more time 'learning' than just 'acquiring' as well.
Awesome OP-addition, JBG ... congrats on adding that cool Artemis example (neat) Ummm, I have this ol' example to add .. ... sadly, I do "not" seem to have a hidden Artemis (where's Waldo?)
