HERE'S ANOTHER MYSTERY COIN I FOUND IN A BOX. I'M GUESSING IT'S SPANISH COLONIAL BUT ONLY A GUESS. IT'S 27mm WIDE AND WEIGHS 6.3 GRAMS. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IT IS. THANKS.
Could be Felipe IV of Spain, but I'm on my phone and don't have access to my bookmarked websites. 1655 would be in the correct range for this king, the counterstamp looks familiar and the coin could very well have a worn "I", leaving only III visible. I am sure that someone will provide more accurate info before I reach home. Hope this helps.
My only concern is that the flan appears a bit thick, the ones I have are thin. Also, the 3 splits along the edge are of interest, however, those may have emerged as a result of the countermark, which is quite robust for such a worn piece. Definately interesting!
Much like this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-copper-Sp...091772?hash=item33b41c64bc:g:~cEAAOSw9uFW9bL8 I have one too, mine was counterstamped in 1653....great history behind these Maravedis coins. Here is a little chat about them being shown on the "Curse of Oak Island" TV show. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/curse-of-oak-island-coin.242566/
The counter mark is a revaluation, the host coin was likely a 4 maravedis. By the 17th century, inflation made it necessary to revalue the coin to 12 maravedis.
Biohc, I just measured and weighed mine, which was revalued in 1641 as 8 maravedis. It's 25 X 21.5 mm and weighs in at 5.01 grams.
Whoops, pressed the send button too early. Here is the other side. These are really fun to collect because they can be so worn and struck off center that you end up having to do some research to figure out who was the issuing monarch. For comparison and to echo Numismat's comment, I have a 16 maravedis dated 1663 that is quite thin and weighs in at 3.97 grams.
