This is first one I saw at auction (Kunker) with the obverse/reverse usually associated with Theodosius II. But it was struck for Valentinian III 425-55AD. Not the best quality photos...sorry.
I made a mistake being a librarian I should have gone into lawn maintenance!! Another gorgeous coin @panzerman
Thank you Bing! I must admit If God would only allow me one category of coinage to collect....I would pick Roman both Western/Eastern/Byzantine Empires. So many diverse themes/Emperors/Usurpers really neat.
Thank you! I really have to give it to the Romans, they perfected coin art. Then my guys (Germans) overthrew the Western Empire. End result, it took almost 900 years to bring standard of coinage back to 400AD era. Byzantine coinage was never up on same level as 4th Century Rome.
That remains me, the snow is melting fast....I am going to have to start back into doing Spring cleanups! Heres a remainder...me at work just 7 months earlier! You can see I am a Yankees fan!
wow, the detail is amazing, the lines in the hair...the little horseman on his shield...just awesome.
Thanks! Me too, I had never seen a Valentinian III with obv./rev. of Theodosius II... I have another Val. III with the common obv./rev. These were of a cruder style. I take photo and post it some time.
Unlike chocolate eggs getting you sick of eating too much at Easter (how appropriate a comment !!! ) I can look at your fantastic gold coins all day long @panzerman, without getting fed up with them. Just a bit green with envy Q
Me too! Actually, I just had three real Easter eggs. Being German, we colour real eggs/green/yellow/orange/red/blue then let them dry in refrigerator. Then we have them as hard boiled eggs...just that they are now Easter Eggs. I can look at this from both sides, one a little envy/ the other, of course is looking at these pieces of historical art, it just wonderfull that they are preserved for us to see today. I looked thru an older Ars Classica auction catalogue from Nov. 2006. In a collection of important Roman gold coins. Wow! There were so many (135) coins, all EF-FDC, some really outstanding stuff. FDC Pescinius Niger/EF+ Quintillus/FDC Licinia Eudoxia.....At least I can enjoy them from a older catalogue! Still wish I had them though! John
