I bought this today and I thought it was fake. My local coin guy said its real but it was dipped in something for jewelry. Anyone know how I can get it off?
TarnX maybe? That stuff don't come off. That stuff damages the coin. When I was a kid, my father took an Oregon Trail commem and dipped it in that (TarnX) stuff. As a kid I thought it looked cool, but I know better today........
Oh my gawd wow!! The surface looks like that of a stainless steel L.100 Lire coin from Italy! I would have told that dealer the same thing!
When you wake up every morning look at it and repeat this words I will not buy coins until I know what I am buying
Every time a collector spends $10 for something like those, it's $10 less than can be applied to something collectible.
Yeah, but the learning experience is priceless.......and, thank the almighty, he probably didn't spend too much to find out about the mistake.........
I definitely got my money's worth. I sold the large cent for $15 and I have a bit of silver. I came out on top
You did well. Even without selling the large cent, 80 cents worth of silver is easily worth 9 or 10 bucks, regardless of how badly the coins have been abused. There's probably no "layer" on the coin, though -- it's just worn and polished. The "dip" the coin guy referred to is probably a dip to remove tarnish from the coin, not something to coat it.
Only way to get that "layer" off is wear lots and lots of wear, even with what your calling a "layer" on it all you will get is scrap price. If you want more take it back where you bought it and ask for your money back
It's either polished to death, or chromed. If it's chromed, it will take something pretty violent to remove it.
That's not for the weak of heart, considering the ingredients you have to play with. If you get it wrong, violence - to your body - happens.
