just placed my order for the BU and proof clad halves. Only designs I thought were worth spending the money on. It took me less than five minutes to get in the Mint's website, place my order and check out. Then a few minutes later I received the confirmation email. Has anyone else gotten their order in yet? What did you get and how many?
Until they stop putting $1 or $5 on commemoratives (instead of spelling out One Dollar and Five Dollars) I am staying away from them. They look like game machine tokens that way!
I ordered the BU half and dollar only, no proofs. I'm finding the recent choices of mirroring elements a bit "cheesy". I also added 4 other products to my order, just to keep the order fillers awake and alert.
That's the reason I didn't buy the dollar coin. The $5 on the gold coin doesn't look so bad to me, but the $1 looks god awful. It's not even the same font as the rest of the coin! Also I have no idea why there's a Latin woman on it. What do Latin females have to do with national parks?!?
I ordered a $5 (sorry) unc., a $1 proof and unc. (sorry), and the clads (both in proof and unc)...............
Is she Latin or Native American? I would think, with an arrowhead and a buffalo, a Native American woman would best fit... Admittedly, she DOES look Latin, I suppose
I will buy the dollar coins just for my collection but the design is just flat out disgusting. Is this the best the US mint can do? Then next year is a joke also
I'll get the BU half dollar to go along with my modern half dollar collection. I don't have many and tend to be a bit picky. I do like the gold design also. They could have done worse.
I just updated my CC, so I took another look at these. Well I think I'll take a ride to the Mint on Monday and buy the Half. Maybe get a soft pretzel or a cheese steak, haven't had one in a while. No I won't go to Pats or Ginos they are about the worst, just a tourist trap. I'll go to Chubbys or Dalessandro's on Henry Ave. If you would like a cheese steak hat, shirt or socks check this out. http://ironpigs.milbstore.com/store.cfm?dept_id=3830&store_id=116
A good chunk of the United States is the former colonial territory of Spain, and a current home to Latin cultures. Presenting Latino-American heritage and preserving its sites is an explicit mission of the National Park Service. That said, I rather dislike the dollar design for its "$1," and the oddly solid geyser. On the other hand, I like the half dollar as much as any recent commems, and the gold maybe even more.
I'm all for preserving all of the cultures that make up our country. The depiction of the "Latina Folklorico dancer" on the dollar coin sort of turned me away. First, they did a really poor job of her representation. I've seen real Latin dancers and they are almost always beautiful. The dancer on this coin actually looks kind of masculine to me. Secondly, even if the mission of the National Parks service does specifically include preserving Latin culture, this appears blatantly political to my eyes. It doesn't present the "multi-cultural experience" as claimed by the Parks Service. It only represents one, single cultural experience - that of the Latin Folklorico dancer. Not trying to be nasty here. I don't like the coin and $45 for less than an ounce of silver is STOOOPID! Jack
The $1 coin is awful, both sides (no offense to Latinas); the half dollar is OK, and the $5 gold is excellent, in my view, and I'll be ordering it today. No bias here, but TR is a distant relative...
