I recently purchased a Gallienus/Gryphon (Griffin). I have several of the Greek coins with a Gryphon on them but this is my first LRB with a Gryphon. It has been poorly cleaned and has considerable wear, but . . . . . . I like it. I believe it to be: GALLIENUS 260-268 A.D. Obv; GALLIENVS AVG, Radiate head right, Rev: APOLLINI CONS AVG, Gryphon walking left, (Delta) in exergue. Ref: RIC V-I.Rome 166 (Sole Reign)
i'd like to get one of these with a griffon or a centaur...on my list! i do have this rather nice one non-mythical animal coin...
You have one, too, Bing. Nice. RIC 165, I guess? Less wear than mine. Nice one, Chris. Very 'sharp' coin. - Bambi?
Nice type to have. I do have one also, that I like very much too Gallienus, Antoninianus Rome mint IMP GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head right APOLLINI CONS AVG, Griffin left. II at exergue 3.18 gr Ref : Cohen # 77, RCV # 10180v, Göbl # 718z Q
Thank-you for the support and for showing me your coins (Awesome coin 'Q'). I don't think your Panther is too 'smelly' Steve. That would be something to watch for 'half-time' entertainment in the Colosseum. "Gryphon Vs Panther". (I don't know how long your Doe would last, Chris.)
=> Topcat, I totally agree that the gryphon was far more common with the Greek coins (I love gryphons ... super cool) Ummm, my next example isn't exactly an LRB, but it is at least a "Roman" example showing a gryphon (hopefully I'm allowed to post more than one thread-example?) Here is one of my favourite gryphons ... oh, and it happens to be a Roman example (yup, here's good ol' Green for another appearance) Marcus Aurelius, AE Drachm (Alexandria)
Thanks ... apparently, it's a sweet Mama gryphon => I'm pretty sure that they were the nastiest of all!! (I'm just sayin') https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griffin
