@Ken Dorney has given you all more excellent information here than I would have divulged! It should take about thirty minutes or less at a conservation service such as NCS to permanently fix the OP's coin. Most of the time involves preparing the coin. The "fix" is fast. Can't say for sure but when the task is completed, I'll bet the VertiCare should insure the corrosion will not return. OR...you can invite a bunch of ancient coin dealers out for drinks and learn MOST of their tricks.
Bright green deposits, now those are the ones I like!!! I am not convinced that BD can spread, I think its more likely coins stored in a hostile environment will succumb to oxidisation together as a result of the conditions rather than the plague victim coming to town. Doctors used to think that diverticular disease was hereditary, but now believe its more likely a result of family members having the same poor diet as a result of eating at the same table. sort of an analogy.?
Well, BD does indeed spread, but not like one thinks in terms of biology (it is not organic of course). It will NOT spread to other coins unless they come into contact with affected coins.
I am not convinced.... I have a few coins with BD sat in a bag with other coins. None show signs of catching it.
I'm pretty sure that it's like rust => the bare metal has to be exposed for the oxidation to occur (no?) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronze_disease
I have seen BD develop on very harshly acid cleaned coins which have been stripped back to the bare metal. I think that the acid remains in tiny pockets and then eats the coin within these pockets. If contact is made with other coins maybe the acid touches other coins and begins to corrode them too.
Better to be safe than sorry. I had a BD coin in a tub with other coins when I first started collecting. I didn't know any better. A couple of the other coins did start to show signs, but they might have been going to get it anyway.
Mostly I agree with this. Bronze Disease is an "attack" of verdigris and may spread by having other coins touch the infected coin and the chemicals causing the verdigris spread (need some water or moisture here since the chemicals don't really crawl around by themselves) and continue the reaction. @BadThad works in metal surface products, and the VerdiCare formula is proprietary, as are all things that people make money on. One of the steps in using VerdiCare is to physically remove the green "stuff". If you do that with water, great. Mostly I have a problem with the use of Dellers Darkener and Renaissance Wax.
OMG...a reasoned and reasonable response...what have you done with @Insider and how much do we have to pay to get him back...uh...never mind : - )
Note: Most of "Insiders" posts (unless he can sneak one in late at night) are now edited for content by his wife BigMoney, also a numismatist.
I've used Verdi-care with quite a bit of success...so far. Here is one that had BD progressing UNDER a coat of wax! I removed the wax, treated with BD and removed what I could, then applied Verdi-care. still looks like this, been about 2 years now... here are some other coins, I don't have before pics...but you can see the "pits" caused by the active BD... both coins still have "green stuff", but none of it will come off with a fingernail or toothpick. so I think it's stable ...for now. the first coin has been over a year, the second coin I just picked up, and is still in "coin quarantine".
Yes. This one also. NOTE: No faces. My sarcasm was bothering important people around here. PS BigMoney was banned also as we use the same home computer and we think the moderators thought I was posting (after being banned) using a different log on...LOL. I'm too stupid/computer illiterate, and honest to have even thought of that. She is going to log on tonight to see what happens.
Great job on the first coin. Thanks for sharing your method. Hint, hint...Conservation specialists and many ancient "diggers", middle-men, and ancient dealers DO NOT USE toothpicks or water to remove "hard" green and red "active" corrosion. It can be "fixed" to raise the eye appeal. corrosion!
ALL GONE and 95% of the fun I feel like the moderators gave me a lobotomy and BigMoney has taped my fingers so I don't get booted for good.
Hmmm...missed something...well at least things should get easier after the lobotomy, right? Lots of finger painting, snacks, warm jackets, super comfy rooms... Anyway Greg, your coin I think can be saved.
