My dad recently gave me a bunch of coins, and I've been going through them. I'll admit I did not want to see the coffee can full of wheat cents. The chances of anything good being in there are minimal, but I figured I'd better look anyway. At. Every. Last. Cent. The vast majority are 1940 or later, just like you'd find in one of those big bags you can buy cheaply at the coin store. Anyway, I think I may have found one. I've checked online for good photos, and it's very difficult for me to make the call on this, especially since the coin is dirty. What do you guys think? Is this the D/S mint mark? I believe I see the fatter part of the D at the top, and the curve of the S inside the D.
I'm inclined to think it is "coffee can" dirt or mild corrosion in the middle of the "D" similar to that which is in the middle of the "44". Chris
This is the best diagnostic photo I could find. If you can look past the coffee can crud, I believe I can see the S curve mentioned in this diagnostic photo as well as the fat upper portion of the D:
Sorry, Mac, I still don't see it. To be honest, I don't think too much of the diagnostic photo, either. If that is the top curve of the "S" to the left of the "D", then there is no way in Hades that the tip of the "S" at the top would be that far to the right. Chris

You're not helping. The S isn't upright; it's angled severely, and the diagnostic photo I provided plus the ones on the Coin Facts site someone linked all show that. If mine were to have the S underneath, I'm seeing things in the right places. So you're just shooting from the hip.
Your image has nothing in common with the posted diagnostic. Are there any other die markers on the D/S which you can match with your coin? Sorry, but the image in the OP shows a dirty cent, and has absolutely nothing in common with the D/S you posted.

Sorry, but I don't agree with your analysis of your coin. I'm calling it like I see it. I realize that the diagnostic photo shows the (purported) "S" slanted to the northwest and that is the reason why there is no possible way that the tip of the "S" can show through the top of the "D" as far to the right as claimed. Whoever came up with that theory is nuts! Chris
