Me too! Too bad, Germany has not made many good looking coins since 1918! There nicest material was produced from 1500-1869. Esp. Holy Roman Empire gold/silver! John

Yes, even mid grade circulated examples sell for high prices compared to other states, even though some like the 1875/1876 5 mark coins show up for sale about as often as some lower priced types.
There are quite a few beautiful castles and palaces in the world, but that thing is not among them. Fortunately Ludwig did not have the chance to ruin Bavaria financially by completing his Cinderella castle. The location is great though. De gustibus, etc. Those early 10M and 20M coins, well, the text on the common side (with the denomination) is a bad example of spacing and "distribution" of the characters. At least that was fixed just a few years later. And if we leave all those coins out that were not made for circulation but were "representation" pieces only, or (these days) just collector coins ... But of course I am aware of the fact that, just as quite a few car fans prefer vintage/classic vehicles, many coin collectors like "the past" better than what is made today. Fortunately there are still many (even affordable) coins from many centuries in the world. Christian

You are right there are MANY beautifull castles....but i kinda like his design. Also, I like Classical Art/music better then modern, also prefer American 50/60s Muscle Cars like 67 vette. In coins, well the UK kept a design invented in 1820/ St. George and the Dragon still on AV Sovereigns today...exactly same as 1820...good choice! Canada, used to have beautifully engraved banknote 1935/37 today they look like play money. Before the advent of paper currency, people carried in their pockets/purses hard money. Most of these coins had a really nice design. Compare from Germany a modern EURO coin/ then compare to recently the 20 marks I posted, or that 1642/41 dukat from Brandenburg-Bayreuth (Which was designed/struck in middle of Europes most horrific War. Fortunately we have a large variety of country specific sides when it comes to euro circulation coins. (Think Italy or Slovenia for example.) This specific 20 M coin I do not find that attractive, mostly due to the spacing issue that I mentioned. Quite a few from earlier periods, including many of those you posted, look gorgeous however. They would not be the kind of coins that the "common man" had in his pockets (many low denomination coins were kind of dull, like today) but the taler or gold coins certainly show a lot of artistic skills.
