Here is a recent win from Kunker auction. FDC Dukat Christian I Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth. Whats unusual is this: This coin was minted in Nurnberg an Imperial City ruled by Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand III, Christian is a Protestant ruler. This thing was struck in 1642 when the "Thirty Years War" was raging in Europe. Nurnberg was a Imperial City ruled by the Catholic Habsburgs! Why would they have struck coins for their enemy?
Certainly was a expert mintmaster in Nurnberg. The coin was beautifully designed. All of the Imperial mints in the Catholic Holy Roman Empire struck magnificent coinage. Here is a unaffordable 30 Dukats Leopold I of Habsburg struck at Graz Mint. 98.75gr. 65mm awesome!
I'm strictly a US collector, but I'd consider branching out for a piece that bears my surname (Brandenburg). Very nice!
That is a nice surname. You can now also collect Brandenburg-Franconia/Brandenburg-Prussia/Brandenburg-Ansbach! I also collect US type gold. I really like the old ones but cannot afford them. John
I bookmarked a piece on eBay that was a "pre-Centennial" (1676) Brandenburg 1/3 silver thaler. It doesn't appear to have "Brandenburg" displayed anywhere on the coin itself, though, and I don't know anything about the series, so I'm probably not ready to be a buyer. (I think it was listed at US$75.)
