Michael White of the U.S. Mint’s Office of Corporate Communications has provided Mint News Blog with early sales totals for the 2016 American Eagle Gold Proof Coins released. Combined sales for all four coins, including those issued in the four-coin set, have reached 45,673 pieces for a total of 21,362.15 ounces of gold Proof coins purchased.
Sales of the individual product options are as follows:

2016 AM EAGLE GOLD PROOF 1 OZ 6,573
2016 AM EAGLE GOLD PROOF 1/2 OZ 1,969
2016 AM EAGLE GOLD PROOF 1/4 OZ 2,143
2016 AM EAGLE GOLD PROOF 1/10 OZ 8,036
2016 AM EAGLE GOLD PROOF 4-COIN SET 6,738

The Mint’s gold coins have been selling well this year and the value of the commodity has been climbing lately, but these totals are impressive even when taking those factors into consideration. Compare the above numbers to the 2015 first-week totals below.

2015 AM EAGLE GOLD PROOF 1 OZ 3,224
2015 AM EAGLE GOLD PROOF 1/2 OZ 914
2015 AM EAGLE GOLD PROOF 1/4 OZ 1,114
2015 AM EAGLE GOLD PROOF 1/10 OZ 2,967
2015 AM EAGLE GOLD PROOF 4-COIN SET 3,109
Every coin except the 1/4-ounce issue more than doubled its first-week sales total as compared to last year, but even the 1/4-ounce piece came close.

It’s possible the initial sales rush has something to do with the fact that the Mint had been on numismatic options for gold coin collectors, but this demand is consistent with what we’ve seen in bullion sales so far this year. As noted today on, American Eagle Gold bullion coins have sold a total of 230,500 ounces across 1-ounce, 1/2-ounce, 1/4-ounce, and 1/10-ounce options, while American Buffalo 1-ounce gold bullion coins sold 57,000 pieces as of last Friday. Gold Eagles and American Buffaloes are each on pace to exceed last year’s sales totals of 801,500 and 220,500 ounces sold, respectively.

The is on Back Order at the time of this writing. For more information on the U.S. Mint’s gold collector coins, please visit the Mint’s.
