Spock1k,that 8 Annas is quite a scarce coin,in the sense that it is very hard to find.I have got a 4 Annas, but not yet an 8 Annas (or 1/2 Rupee).

    here's a bit of info

Also..your coin was minted in Calcutta because it has no 'dot' near the bottom of the coin on the reverse

Are you sure the price is only .50 cents. I wouldthink its a rare coin and worth much more. People at the cicf were asking 50 bucks for the coin

Those are the Krause numbers, even on-line price guides say the coin is only worth $12 in unc.

I think it is a extreemly fine example of a 8a but $40 is way too much for it, highest I would have gone I think would have been about £6, would agree with Aidan about them been relitivly hard to find though.

They are scarce, but Indian coins are not priced high, so $40 is way higher than most would go. Oh well...just hope you get half of that back..

Spock, dont be disheartened.. This coin is worth $40 now.. Infact, you cannot buy this coin lesser than this amount anywhere in ebay.. And here in India, it is worth about $50 in this condition. The 1920 coin is really tough to get and it will easily fetch you around $110 in any condition.. A UNC of this 1919 coin will worth around $55.. I'm talking about the present market price and not the catalogue price. Be careful about the fakes.. I've noted a lot of fakes for this coin in the auction sites of Poland.

spiral other than the diameter and the weight. is there any other way of knowing the coin is a fake? Thanks

Well... Just see that there is some casting dips or bumps, especially in the letters. The 'A' in the 'Annas' will almost always reveal whether it is genuine or not. I've attached picture of a good fake here..
