So I got distracted again and bought a small collection of 10 FEL TEMP Galley and Hut coins because I obviously don't have enough already.

Part of the appeal was a couple of what are loosely referred to as "Barbarous imitations" of the galley types. One copies Constans and the other copies Constantius II.

    Barbarous imitation copying Constans AE2

The legends are both bungled but seem to be copying as follows.

Obv:- D N CONSTA-NS P F AVG, Pearl iademed, draped, cuirassed bust right
Rev:- FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Emperor standing left, in a galley; Phoenix on a globe in right hand and holding labarum in left hand; Victory at the tiller of the galley right.
    Minted in Trier; (//TRS), A.D. 348-350
Reference:– cf RIC VIII Trier 215

Barbarous imitation copying Constantius II AE2 of Trier

Obv:- CONSTANT-IVS P F AVG, Pearl diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right
Rev:- FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Emperor standing left, in a galley; Phoenix on a globe in right hand and holding labarum in left hand; Victory at the tiller of the galley right
    Minted in Trier; (//TRS),

Here is one of the hut coins. This one is what caught my attention in the first place.

    Constans - AE2

Obv:- D N CONSTA-NS P F AVG, Rosette-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust left, globe in right hand
Rev:- FEL TEMP REPAR-ATIO, Helmeted soldier, spear in left hand, advancing right, head left; with his right hand he leads a small bare-headed figure from a hut beneath a tree. The spear points up and to the right
    Minted in Lugdunum, (// *PLG), A.D. 348-350

Fantastic score, Martin => looks like 10 more winners to toss onto your massive pile of winners, eh? (congrats)

    chrsmat71 I LIKE TURTLES!

that last one is great, but there is something charming about that first barbarous coin's style!

I feel precisely as the others.....cool 'barbarous' coins, but I LOVE that Constans AE-2 !!! Simply fabulous!!!

As chrismat71 states, I simply love those barbarous imitations in their "naïve crudiness"

    Hey folks, I just invented a new word, didn't I ?

Mine is the matching Rome mint 'N' for Constantius II. Note both of them have fancy cuffs but the diadem of Constans is very different being rosette while mine is pearl (no rosettes). Some people are very impressed with this difference. Martin's coin shows a very strong rosette where the ties attach.

    Doug,
Yours is a gem. I love the patina. Mine is a dark green but your chocolate brown is glorious.

I have finished photographing more of the coins I bought showing the diversity in them.

Another Constans from Rome with fancy cuffs. The coin unfortunately suffers from a patchy patina

    Constans - AE2

Obv:- D N CONSTANS P F AVG, Pearl diademed, draped & cuirassed bust left holding globe,
Rev:- FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Helmeted soldier, spear in left hand, advancing right, head left; with his right hand he leads a small bare-headed figure from a hut beneath a tree. The spear points up and to the right
    Minted in Rome; (//R*S)

A Constans phoenix galley from Rome. The coin still has layers of dirt on it but the cleaner has defaced it with some nasty scratches during mechanical cleaning.

    Constans - AE2

Obv:- DN CONSTA-NS PF AVG, Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right,
Rev:- FEL TEMP-REPARATIO, emperor in military dress standing left on galley, holding Phoenix and labarum, Victory sitting at the stern, steering the ship
    Minted in Rome; (//RE)

And a Constantius II phoenix galley. There is just enough of the exe visible to make it out. I liked the detailed reverse on this one.

    Constantius II - AE2

Obv:- D N CONSTANTIVS P F AVG, pearl diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right
Rev:- FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Emperor standing left, in a galley; Phoenix on a globe in right hand and holding labarum in left hand; Victory at the tiller of the galley right
    Minted in Trier (// TRS).

I won't inflict the remaining coins as they have even more problems than these. Overall a nice mix of coins.

I find the differences in details on the galley sides (XXX on the last, dots in boxes above that one).
