Unfortunately, it's not only new collectors, even if we often throw them into that category. There are a regrettable number of collectors out there, who even after having been at it for years, do the same thing.
I read it but hard for me to understand how it could happen. Although my head is still spinning from Michigan State losing to the 15 seed costing me my coin spending money!
A thick skin and an odd sense of humor helps on this site. I posted pics of a Greek silver coin just about the time I bought it off of e-bay and members here assured me it was a fake, so I didn't lose money on it. Great people, but do have a thick skin.
Proofs found themselves in circulation when times got tough , or when a kid grabbed his parents coin for a candy bar . Like Santinidollar said most turn into PR-50s but I've seen some that could only identified as proofs by their diagnostics meaning around PF-8 .
Easy to argue with any random shot of a toned coin, but harder to argue with an old-style slab. Nice catch!
Thank you Santini, and JeffB and everyone who posted. Positive or negative it's all to help me learn. My passion for this hobby is in the hunt and negotiation. I would rather drive 200 miles to an estate sale or auction, even the flea market to roll the dice and buy something I like. I have made purchases from established local coin shops, there is no excitement in that for me. Am I going to get burned once in awhile? You bet, and I count on it. All calculated risk. Am I disappointed ? Of course, but you will never hear me whine. Perhaps I don't use this sight correctly....it's kind of a first step authentication service, and of course endless hours of reading and looking at other peoples stuff. Uh Oh here comes the odd sense of humor......... WHY IS ALL MY STUFF CRAP? AND ALL YOUR CRAP IS STUFF? Many thanks to all Tally Ho
Don't overlook the fact that you can find graded/slabbed coins at estate sales. Did that once recently.
Proofs get spent all the time, now as well as then. After they've circulated a while, they can acquire any grade. And now for your English lesson: it's = it is.
