Time to time, I, like a lot of folks around here, visit ebay... Not usually to buy but to see errors, window shop and broaden my knowledge of what to look for while roll searching...

I'm starting this thread to be able to use and re-use by anyone who want to post about interesting nickels they see on Ebay... Could be rare nickels, altered nickels, or just general discussion of a particular nickel for sale... Anyway... We'll see how it goes...

To start, I found an interesting "vise job" notice the letters are backwards .. however it is one of the more convincing ones I've seen and it is drawing a couple bids... So if you find something interesting on ebay post it up here!

Yep... It seems he doesn't know common courtesy of coins.

My intention is purely education... If I get an item all wrong, and it is legitimate, set me straight, I want to learn as well as teach.

The more I look at this one, the more it looks like a partial brockage.. note the skewed/elongated appearance of the wording... which is typical of a brockage... Any experts out there?

Why don't you post it in the "error coins" section.
More likely to get noticed there.

    Personally, I find it puzzeling.
Looks like reeding, and a partial upset rim on the second struck part.
Also, the people bidding on it don't seem to be newbies.

Caution though, unless you are 100% sure that it's altered, you might have another lawsuit coming just like a few days ago.

Actually, I believe that this is a legit error, probably a brockage.
Not that I am an expert on errors, but it looks okay to me.

I think you are right Frank. I haven't seen too many brockages in person but from the photos I've seen this one looks alright.

question...if it was a vice, wouldn't the backwards lettering have been flattened?

    Dak,
That finger happy Nickel holding coin seller got over 26 bucks for that one. Go Figure!

Anyway, as I read and ask questions on these-here posts, I see that the majority of you advise to buy local where coin in hand is possible. Right?
It's hard for me to get around at times though...
Is there a place online that some of you may suggest purchasing coins from that has a good track record?

details are definately lost but there will be enough left to make the coin appear like an error.

Give me a minute I'll go smash one and show ya...

    I did.
I asked someone experienced in the field, and it's a genuine Mint error.
Obviously the bidders recognized that as well.

Ok.. Check it out I just "found" these laying on my workbench in the garage...

    A 1999 D and a 1998 D Imagine my luck!!!

lol.. You can now see the difference between the brockage in the auction and the vise job I "found" in my garage!! lol :)

Nice examples dak, they show how much more pressure was used on the other coin by the mint press.
