I am pretty new to collecting and want to make sure I don't damage my notes. I recently bought a couple of Confederate notes from an estate sale that a previous owner had mounted in frames using one sticky mount on the back of each. The mount is attaching the notes to the cardboard type sheet that was in the frame. What is the best way to remove the mounts without causing any damage? Any help is appreciated.
Hair dryer, and finesse. Edit to add: These mounts can and do look good and are a good way to display your collection, but never stick them directly to the mount. Put them in a sleeve first. The sleeve will stick just as well as a bare note.
I'm pretty sure they are real. I'll try and take pics tomorrow night and post them. I want to put them in sleeves so that I can put them with the rest of my collection as well as better examine the backs. Two of them are interest bearing and have issue stamps/notes on the back. There may be something interesting on one of them!
Here are some pics. You can't really see the mount without pulling the paper back a bit more than I'd like to right now. You can see it through the paper though, behind the train cab.
The hair dryer method worked. It didn't take long to heat up the mount and the notes pulled right off. Remnants of the mount are still on the backs but nothing ripped. Thanks for all of your help.
