The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee met yesterday to discuss a large portfolio of images for consideration as possible obverse and reverse designs for the 2017 20th Anniversary American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin, the 2017 American Liberty High Relief Gold Coin and Silver Medal, and the 2017 Boys Town Centennial Commemorative Coin Program.

The committee’s recommendations are provided below, with brief descriptions based on narratives provided by the U.S. Mint. The Commission of Fine Arts will also review the design candidates tomorrow, March 17, after which time they will put forward their own choices to be considered by the Treasury.

The 2017 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the debut of the U.S. Mint’s Platinum Eagle bullion coins in 1997. While coins in this series have always featured John Mercanti’s rendering of the Statue of Liberty as an obverse image, this reverse, designed by Thomas D. Rogers, Sr., has not been...

The 2017 APE Reverse seems, um, kinda plain. Not buying it.

MUCH prefer the 2015 APE Reverse:

Obverse & Reverse are the same as 1997. Okay.

But they said, "...this reverse, designed by Thomas D. Rogers, Sr., has not been issued on a platinum Proof coin since its introduction in 1997.

But that's misleading. The same Reverse appeared on other platinum coins, like this:

So it's certainly not a one-year-only design. Anyway, I don't see it as a premium design, to celebrate the 20th anniversary.

That reverse looks like a Thunderbird that just came to life and flew off the top of a totem pole :wacky:

The 1997 is ugly and so is the 2017 selection. There were better options IMO. Not a customer. :(
