Nein! I spent it all on coins, always broke....probably never be able to retire! Which is a good thing, rather work hard, play hard, same time stay in good shape. mentally, physically. In a few weeks all the snow will be gone...time for me to go back to work in landscape business/ daydream about coins while doing my grind.

Great stuff! Look really nice with black background. The Osthrogoths were not around for long, Justinians General Belisarius retook most of Italy back for the Byzantines. Until the Langobards invaded Italy.

You got that right..... It all depends how one defines the term. Actual ca$h in bank, or total value of a$$ets. Like, I bought some of my coins, like the Donative FDC Diocletianus Aureus back in 1994 for $7000US. I saw one recently sell at Ars Classica in Zurich in lesser grade for 90K SFs. I heard a coin investment seminar, they said that coins appreciate 15% per annum. Many rare coins that sold in 1940s for $300, sold for $7000 in 70s now probably $600,000+
So, coin collecting which is so much fun, is also greatest investment you can make.

Yup. Under the Ostrogoths, Italy was at its most prosperous and stable it had been in a long time. Then the Byzantines invaded and that basically turned that upside down, with consequences that would last for centuries.

Your right. Most think that these Germanic peoples were a bunch of pillaging, drunken barbarians, well they actually proved to be stable rulers. With coinage, they copied the Western/ Eastern Roman types, later these people made their own. It took Western Europeans almost 900 years to have coin designs, workmanship, minting on par with material struck under Diocletian/Licinus/Constantine.

    Hello,

I live in the Netherlands and have some German friends and I am also always broke, buying too many coins, investment, probably indeed the gold and silver will do well in the future, but the younger people do not collect anymore so much, same with stamps that market went down a lot.
Same for paintings, a Nice Dutch painting from the 17th century or more early was always expensive, but also there prices dropped.

Awesome addition @panzerman ! I think on a couple of your coins you mentioned you bought them in the 90s. Are you still actively buying?

Guess that's not really my business...never mind.

Very cool collection. You know, I have never owned a gold coin and I imagine it will be quite a while until that changes.

Thanks so much. Actually, I just looked on Kunker auction site, and found out I was successfull in my mail bid...I bid 900 EUROS on a EF AV Double Albertins d'or 1601 Antwerpen Mint from Brabant (Spanish Netherlands) I got it for E850!
These guys are always crudely hammered and EF is about best you can get. I usually go for FDC. Yeah, I am VERY ACTIVE, will be for long time to come!
I will post that coin, when it arrives from Germany.

While I'm at it, you've only posted gold...and paper. Do you not collect silver and bronze?

Yes and no. There are lots of new collectors now in India/China/Russia/Middle East/ Latin America, I know many of the younger crowd are so addicted to their stupid smartphones, walking along like in a daze...well when theygrow older, they will find that real hobbies like coins....much more fun. My favorite thing in life is owning a frame-off restored 1967 CorvetteBlack/red stinger hoodscope/factory sidepipes/KO wheels/powerglide 2 speed/427/400Horsepower Engine...even nicer then gold coin. I do not own a smartphone! Car is way nicer! and fast!!!! john photos 1 040 (Medium).jpg john photos 1 041 (Medium).jpg
