That's why it's being sold raw on ebay.

Is there a real numismatic value/market to cleaned key date coins like this?

Yea cleaned/details coins have a market. They're cheaper which allows more people to have those coins in their budget range or they just may not want to spend the full price on it. At that right price that one would sell.

That's probably more than half the price of a decent XF? That one would bug me every time I looked at it. But maybe some are bugged more with an unfilled hole in the album.....

Edit: I think what I was trying to say was that I'm surprised the bidding went as high as it did...

Why buy one splendid showpiece if you can have 2 or 3 harshly cleaned coins for the same money? ;-)

That would be a pocket piece for a few months if I bought it :)

Just testing the waters to see what it would sell for is my guess. He may have bought it thinking "score - uncirculated" and found out it was cleaned.

It does show some luster so my guess is it's an AU Details grade. Still a nice specimen for a collection.

I just got mine back from ANACS and the only thing I was hoping to confirm was authenticity.

And with a grade of VG-8 Details - I'd certainly be happy with a $1700+ bid

Meanwhile, back at the reality ranch! Mine is confirmed real.

Next to try and convince someone it's "undergraded"

Not at all. He's probably going to ship it registered which is roughly that, maybe a touch more even. And if not he's probably rough estimating on the high side of the base cost of a small FRbox plus insurance plus signature.

When buying these key dates, I look at "details" graded coins. A light cleaning or some faint hairlines, no problem. IMO, the one listed in the OP has been TOO harshly cleaned for my tastes.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

I personally would much rather have one coin that makes everyone go "WOW" than 2 or 3 that are "Meh" or "That's really cool, but...". It's always the "But..." that gets me.

Xf details. This one been scrubbed. Too bad as it was a nice meaty coin before. Pass at any price
