Just for the heck of it, I would bid on/buy one of these rolls of early dollars, lol. http://www.ebay.com/itm/231875712238?_trksid=p2060353.m1431.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT Claims he got them from an old guy with a large coin collection. No way I would be unable to open one of them, if I was able to buy them in the first place.
The paper roll wasn't patented until 1921. These aren't originally wrapped, as Morgans did not leave the Mint or any bank in rolls.
Not to mention, the bank that is stamped on the roll went out of business under that name in the early 1900s. Again, if I had $1 million to play with, I'd buy one for the fun of it. Better than wasting it on lottery or at the casino, as I would know that at least the enders are (hopefully) worth something, lol. This is one of those auctions that you really wish you could talk to the high bidder after they receive the item.
[QUOTE="Garlicus, This is one of those auctions that you really wish you could talk to the high bidder after they receive the item. I don't think you would be able to talk to someone you can't ID. All the bids on all rolls are "private listing - bidders' identities protected". Makes me wonder if they are legit or posted by the seller. Dave
I would buy an MS-66 or higher 1907 Saint EXH. I don't think I could afford the UHR pattern with only $1 MM. Also some other rare Saints. Figure about 50-60% of the $1 MM on Saints. Than maybe 5% on some super-high quality Morgans. I'd also buy some pure bullion (10-15%)....slabbed modern bullion in high-grades (15%) and the balance on miscellaneous. That's what I would do with $1 MM dedicated only to coins.
But a lot did circulate here for awhile too . But to me that is a salted roll , that I bet the rest of the coins are common date circulated coins . I'd bid on the CC being an 1882-4 and the Trade as a '75-S .
It just sold for $2325 Imagine if the 18 coins between the CC Morgan and the Trade are all copper-nickel clad Ike dollars.
You'd be very disappointed once you opened it friend. BUT, I agree, it might be fun just blowing a few thousand bucks on whatever struck your fancy!
If I had that kinda money, I'd do it - and then go visit the fraudsters in an attempt to clean up this nation! Whiskey for my men, beer for my horses!
