Just finished a rough 4 days of shooting a State High School Basketball Championship where I put in 51 hours of kneeling under a basketball hoop to take photos of the tournament.. My reward was a Sunday only coin show that hits here locally every few months. This show always seems to have a few coins that just have to come home with me. Today it was a 1913 Type 1 and Type 2 Buffalo Nickel pair. The Type 2 is my favorite as I'm a sucker for color, but the Type 1 was no slouch either. Both are raw. The Type 2 has something near the eye on the obverse that I didn't notice at the show, it's typically pretty dimly lit. But I'm happy with them. The Type 1 The Type 2
Very nice. I love the type 1 Buffalo nickels because of the textured reverse, but that T2 is gorgeous, too. I don't think the dark spot near the eye is distracting at all, and I love the color.
Just like professional athletes, he had to smear some charcoal around his eyes to cut the glare from that hot toning...
Thanks guys. @Santinidollar not sure if I'm going to spend the $20.00 or so each on them on not. I'm not great at grading Buffalo's so I guess it depends on where the Buffalo experts thing they might grade at. The Type 1 I'm picked up for $50.00 so unless it would grade at MS-65 then it wouldn't be worthwhile. The Type 2 I'm picked up for $85.00 and again MS-64 would be a wash and MS-65 would be worthwhile. I just don't think they would make those grades. But again, I'm not very good at grading Buffalo's, I just bought what I liked.
I'm no expert on Buffaloes for sure. I have a grand total of one in my collection and I bought that one because I loved the toning.
This is the closest coin I've ever come across that would be a nearly dead ringer for pro athlete eye black, the 1919 DDO that I picked last year.
There is something about a beautifully toned Buffalo Nickel that is hard to turn away from. The Type 2 is just stunning in hand with the iridescent rainbow.
Thanks, it was the coin that sold on Great Collections. http://www.greatcollections.com/Coin/326866/1919-Mercury-Dime-DDO-FS-101-PCGS-XF-40
I'm quite aware of it. I sold it to Leo Frese in an ANACS EF-40 holder. It was then crossed over to PCGS and then sold on Great Collections. The link to the auction was in post #10.
