I purchased this silver 'Penny' as a 1483 Edward V, but when I went to catalogue it I wondered if it might not be a 1483 Richard III. Note:- Rose in centre of cross. (See Spink Coins of England 1988, P.169.) Can anyone assist me with their opinion, please?
Sorry man, but I can't ... maybe the World-coin-dudes can help you out? Cool coin though ... good luck
Thanks, Steve, There is someone here, (can't remember who), who posted Long/Short cross English coins (not too long ago), and they seemed quite knowledgeable. I was hoping to attract them. If that doesn't happen, 'World Coins' eh?
I can't make out the mint mark, nor the obverse legend to say anything for certain. However, Edward V never produced a coin with a quatrefoil center of the reverse. Edward IV and Richard III did. That being said, the Richard III penny minted in York (the one with the quatrefoil) is rare, while the Edward IV is fairly common.
Mintmarks are usually at the beginning of the legend. What's in the middle of the cross I think is a quatrefoil which would indicate it was minted under the authority of the Archbishopric of York. If the only options are Edward V and Richard III, then it would be Richard as SCBC says EV's coins were only minted in London
you are right Swish - and I'm ashamed to say I missed looking at your post first! RIII has a key at right and T at left - OP definitely has the key, but not the T. That's looking more like a G, which I believe makes it either Edward IV (SCBC 2062), or Henry VI restored (2088), or Edward IV's second reign (2125). Not sure I could tell more without seeing the Mintmark...
I overlooked that one. I still think it's Edward IV, second reign. Without the mint mark, it's a total guess.
Well, thank-you guys. Your 'spirited' conversation about the coins possibilities is exactly what I was looking for. I, too believe that what is in the middle of the cross on the reverse is a 'quatrefoil' and not a 'halved sun and rose', therefore, I am (regretfully) of the opinion that what I have is the more common Edward IV (Second Reign) 2125. Thank-you, again.
The halved sun and rose would be the mint mark. Edward IV, Edward V, and Richard III all used that mint mark. However, Edward IV pence from York did not have that mint mark. If FitzNigel is correct that there is a G and Key on either side of the bust, that would make the coin Edward IV, issued under Archbishop George Neville, or Henry VI. Without being able to clearly see the mint mark, I wouldn't be able to say for certain, but I do believe it's an Edward IV penny, either S. 2062, 2125, or 2130.
