From USA Today, 11/16/04, page 3A: A 78 year-old retired glass-factory supervisor will cash in what remains of his record-setting collection of 1,407,550 pennies worth $14,075.50 accumulated over 34 years. http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2004-11-15-penny-collector_x.htm *********** I would love to have gotten my hands on 1972, 1995 and other double die years. Could you imagine the pennies he had in 1939 when he bought his Schwinn? Even the 40,000 pennies he cashed in 1970 probably yielded some nice dates. All that cataloging and records is now being "eaten" by a Coinstar machine...you would think that he probably saved and knew about key dates?? I sure hope so because the article doesn't say anything about those he kept for himself.
well...if he inspected every coin he probably had at least some knowledge on dates and stuff...and definitely he love pennies!...otherwise would be boring as hell...
So what's he using the money for this time? Also, what kind of weiners run his bank? I think I'd find a new place to do business with! Nick
Just think of all the free advertising this gentlemen got. Something we could use a little of in this hobby. Now consider this....why did this man not consider taking his rolls to a dealer for an inspection of the possible good dates such as 1972? Could it be that he did not know any better? Could it be that once again, we whom know better do not share our hobby with enough people? I guess that we may never know.....
I was at work today, and some guys were talkin about this, BUT, they said it consisted of very old cents AND quarters, nickels, dimes...... I thought about it for a minute, and spoke up, saying they were all cents... one guys reply : " what would you know about coins, you aren't even old enough to know we had wheat cents" Well, as most would know this kind of upset me. My reply " putting my age aside for a moment, let's take a look at something.... I collect coins from the 1800's, pops, as well as sell coins from time to time, the last hoard of wheat cents I had was over 50 pounds, so next time you decide to guestimate someone doesn't know anything about coins, because of their age, think about how ignorant you sound. " Needless to say him and a couple of other guys have set up appointments with me, wanting to buy some coins
Don't take this the wrong way, just a friendly observation, but your age definately shows in your response to them
Penny Your right , age is no record of accomplishment, I opened my first successful business at 19 years old, and ran with it for 26 years, now I work for an Indian tribe, and am considered one of the old guys, if you know what I mean ? Good luck with the coin deals ,,and these old Guys !!
Sorry, but, I do not see where my age reflects in that statement, dad didn't raise me to keep my comments to myself :d For instance, some people need to have a good butt kicking before they realize they did something wrong.... While in this particular instance, I had to bring myself down to the level of these co-workers, and pop off. Your somewhat new here, you will learn more about me as time goes along i'm sure. Have a good one.
I've actually been lurking here for over a year, I've read a good deal of your post and have a good perspective.
Sorry, but as someone old enough to be your grandfather (at least), I, for one, am offended by this comment, which does clearly show your age:
