School Is In Session !! OK....comments appreciated on whether you LIKE the coin, like it for the grade, and think it's REASONABLY priced (you can think it's over or underpriced, I'm more concerned with if it is 'in the ballpark'). All from the New Orleans mint. If someone moves on one of them, just let us know if you got the coin later on. Thanks ! I like the 1898o DMPL. It has all the positive attributes of nice DMPLs. Definitely a strong eye appeal coin!!! Price is a little high, but it is a nice coin--if I needed that date in Pl or DMPL, I'd bite. The 84o has an asking price that is on crack. The coin you got is nicer and cleaner, at half that price. The 82 o lacks eye appeal, with lots of distracting marks, typical of a lower grade Morgan. Meh, on that one-- price is its main attraction. The 85 o is a nice coin, with that one unattractive bit of toning by the forehead on the obverse. If one can live with what looks like a dirt patch, it is otherwise well- priced. The best one, clearly is the 98 o.
OMG....I may actually be learning something...I actually agreed more or less with MD's commentary !! Hell is gonna freeze over....or Donald Trump is taking Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio out for dinner and a night on the town.
The 1898-o is the sharpest, to my eye, but my wallet is not happy with the price. Another price cut and he might get me as an interested customer.
He's not going there -- at least for me -- but if someone here REALLY likes the coin, I will let someone here have 1st dibs on it if they want it. Since I just got a coin and $$$ are tight, I am non-committal at this point. He'll basically take throwing in a McDonald's dinner with the price, whereas I was hoping for an all-u-can-eat Thai or Sushi discount.
Think he is still too high. I see that as a $475 coin. Since I just got 6 fairly pricey coins, and a new guitar, I will pass on it, unless he gets real with the price.
Gotcha....nothing wrong with being price-sensitive at times, we have to. But IMO 10% is in the ballpark of FMV, wouldn't you agree ? OTOH, if he was 30-40% over FMV that's a ripoff.
FMV according to PCGS price guide is $475. We all know that PCGS guide is 10-20% high. With the CAC, and it being at the top of grade, I think under $500 is a fair figure to hold fast. Absolute max for that coin to me is $475-499. Had I not spent $1000 on a new Stratocaster yesterday, I would offer him $499, take it or leave it.
Morgan dude, I was thinking $450 to $475. No, I won't be competing since I just made another purchase. But which do you think is the most fairly priced coin?
The 98o for quality. I think The 85o is the best priced for what it is, but I don't like the face smudge. If it were rim-toned, it would be far more desirable.
Now, this one I really like. More nice toning, great devices, and well priced for a good offer: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1885-Morgan-Dollar-MS64-DMPL-PCGS/191819518781?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid=222007&algo=SIC.MBE&ao=1&asc=35694&meid=0ea757fca6ae43f5953dc156b16fecef&pid=100005&rk=3&rkt=6&sd=121889447378
Or this one. Really like it: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1884-O-Morg...b1c52b6&pid=100005&rk=2&rkt=6&sd=191819518781
I got that number from PCGS CoinFacts, that's what you are referencing, right ? Between that, Ebay (sold/completed) and Heritage (current/past auctions), I think I have a good reference point for what is FMV.
Understood....in your past years of collecting, I am sure you paid up for a coin that was harder to find in the quality you wanted. A coin that you might not see at another local/regional show let alone on the Internet or an LCS. When that situation presented itself and you knew you could go months or even a year between finding one even CLOSE to that one, how much would you go over FMV ? 10% ? 25% ?
That is hard to say. I am a value buyer. I have paid over FMV for specialty coins sometimes. I would say occasionally 10-15% maximum. All my overvalue purchases tended to end up being undervalued in the long run.
My 1884-O & "Undergrading": I may have determined why/how the MS64 DMPL is high-quality for a 64 and maybe deserving of an MS-65. https://forums.collectors.com/messageview.aspx?catid=26&threadid=222533 According to a resident slab expert at CU, the slab is version 3.5 which was ONLY produced/used in December 1989 and maybe for ONLY the last week of that month ! The "Bubble" in coin prices had begun months sooner but a resurgence would last through early-1990. So I am not sure if grading standards had been eased by the time this slab was used. It is the NEXT slab -- 4.0 -- that is the 1st "Green" holder, despite the greenish-looking appearance of the 3.5. I am pretty sure mine is not 4.0 (used from Jan 1990 - 1995). Anyway, the link above is a good reference. Maybe some vets here can tell us for sure what slab(s) are associated with clear PCGS overgrading.
