I went to a coin show last weekend here in Phoenix and I was surprised at the lengths the host club went to to get kids interested in coin collecting! There was a kind of treasure hunt they set them one, and throughout the treasure hunt they picked up a book, a loupe, a slabbed penny, even exonumia and a few other pieces. It was really amazing. I want to give a shout-out to the club that put it on (I gather we are not supposed to give specific info on this forum about clubs, shops or people). If you're from this club you will know who you are. Want to say thank you as well. Because, what this club did to get kids interested worked almost too well. My boys haven't stopped talking and trading with each other since the weekend. Now it is up to me to keep them interested. It was a first show for all of us. I went with 2 of my boys Saturday for only an hour and went back the Sunday with my wife and another son that had been with her Saturday. I also brought a kid who had a sleep over with us. We all had a great time! It was fun dealing for coins and seeing what was out there. I'm looking forward to the next one.
Nice. I took my 7yo brother to long beach last month and he did a treasure hunt there. He was given a list of questions and under each question was a table number of the dealers who had the answer. He got little stuff here and there from the dealers then for completing the treasure hunt he got these... I don't even own a single sample slab yet! Lol Nice to see it was a hit at your show too
@ David Allen This is an excellent way to grow the hobby, and I commend your local club for working to inspire YN's. Personally, I see nothing wrong with posting the name of this particular club because the show has already taken place and there is no ulterior motive for doing so. We often have the name, location and contact info provided so that others might be able to take advantage of shows that are close to them. Chris
It was the Phoenix Coin Club and like I said, it was a good time. Besides it simply being great checking out all of the coins, I had a ball talking with some of the old timers. There is a thread on this forum about old timers being to crotchety. But at the show I found them enthusiastic and full of great information. Shows are an excellent place to learn! And not just about coins. One guy told me that at an El Paso show folks were coming across the border with wads of cash and buying up all the gold. Seems there might be an attempt there to clean some dirty money...
Sounds like a lot of fun for a YN. Now you'll have to trade one of your coins with your brother to get a sample slab....lol.
Awesome report.... Thank you for taking the time to take YN's to a show and thank you for sharing it with us.
He has a silver pirate treasure chest I got him and he's up to around 25oz of cool MK barz and better bullion. For his birthday I gave him a 2oz siren. His eyes went wide and he held it for a couple hours before putting it in the chest. It beat all other gifts including ps4 games and he's a game addict. He loves silver the little butthead.
Wish the thrice yearly coin show around here would do the same thing. I'm in my early 60s and feel like the YN in the place at times.
It's great to hear that you and your kids enjoyed the show. I'm a member of the Phoenix Coin Club and was helping to hand out the slabbed pennies and slab boxes so there is a good chance that we met each other last Saturday. I belong to three different clubs in the valley and am happy to say that they all go out of their way to treat kids right and get them interested in the hobby. I think the best way to say thanks would be to bring your kids to a monthly meeting sometime to show the club membership that their efforts have made a difference. You can check the club website phoenixcoinclub.com for more information on meeting information. I have a 9 year old daughter and she is the reason why we have joined three clubs. She has a great time going to all the meetings and has learned a lot about coins in the last few years. I'm sure your kids would have fun too. David
