Of all my recent arrivals, I think this one is my favorite. Diadumenian of Nikopolis, city gate reverse. It's an excellent bust of the short-lived prince, and copious detail on a rare reverse. The coin also has an exotic two-toned patina, green on one side, brown on the other...
Hope you don't mind...I'm in a misc mood...here's a WWII token I found interesting: See the thread here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/430th-aaf-base-exchange.255913/#post-2026861 The scratches on the obverse are die polish lines. Same with the circles on the reverse. To keep things honest... One of my early ancient purchases that I just really love. Marcianopolis, Caracalla, AD 198-217 AE27, 10.2g, 6h. Obv.: ΠIOC AVΓ ANTΩNINOC; Laureate head right, seen from behind. Rev.: YΠ KYNTIΛIANOY MAPKIANOΠOΛITΩN (Quintillianus magistrate); Eagle standing left on globe, head right, holding wreath
Here's a better image of the reduced uncia of Bruttium I posted yesterday. This one is truer to the color...
Likewise here's a better image of the larger unit bronze of Bruttium... This coin has some countermarks which I don't recognize, on Zeus' forehead area. I can make out AN in letter punches, but what comes before is garbled. Underneath that is a small mark in which I read ΔK (or maybe ΔN) within a rectangular incuse punch. This bears some investigation.
neat thread! that diadumenian city gate is pretty darn sweet! here's some misc. stuff i never post here. i'll lead off with this, i always love posting pics of my dong.... here's some ceramic notgeld, one guilded...one a token that is huge. i got this in the world coin secret santa, a couple of neat tokens, the one is silver.
Great stuff Chris, but what the devil is going on on the obverse of the large token? Some strange angelic bondage scene.
Well, I may as well post a few more ... it's late, I can't sleep and these are pretty fricken cool, eh? (I kinda miss collecting these babies)
JA, that was my area of interest in the 1990's. I was even a member of the BHNC (Bust Half Nut Club) and had more than 125 die varieties of bust halves. Then I discovered ancients.....
I'm thinking of collecting a set of 19th-century US type coins, but they would need to look like the Bust Half I just bought - worn and crusty, but reasonably detailed, at least VG. I could call it Totally Worthless Collection Of 19th-Century US Type Coins That Might Look Ancient If They Weren't So Damn Round.
