Now that we are almost 6 months into the Presidential Coin series, I'm wondering if the government or the mint is getting anything out of this legistlation which was forced on it. Has anyone notices an improvement in the circulation of dollar coins? Ruben
I heard way before these coins came out, that they were strictly for collecting. the mint makes money..err haha..I mean a profit from collectors. Which is why the penny will never die.
I pay for stuff with them all the time, it's fun to see there expressions, onetime someone said they don't accept chucky cheese tokens! THe only time I get them back is at coin shows though.
The mint doesn't make any profits. I don't know how many times that needs to be repeated, but I'll keep repeated it as necessary. Ruben
I've spent several hundred dollars worth mostly at convienent stores and yard sales knowing that at the YS's they would keep them, but at the C-stores they have told me they just deposit with the daily receipts (they hated them) I have NEVER gotten one back in circulation unless I've asked for them. So the way I see it it's just another ploy to make tons and tons of coins that won't do much, I guess the mint is no different than any other big business, to keep there budget up they have to show that they can and have a need to spend the money....Just came to me if the average family tries to save 1 P and 1 D roll of each coin plus maybe 1 extra, per child, that's atleast three rolls or $75.00 for ea. Prez.per child, I don't have census stats but there is a boatload of youngins out the (personally I can account for two) so I'm going to give it a shot and say 150 million children under the age of 18 so using these numbers that works out to over 11 billion dollars taken out of circulation, 11 billion x's the number of president coins...getting a headache it's lots of zeros though imo John
I spend them all the time however I do not see them in circulation I think the ones I give out people are just saving them. Bruce.
The Mint might not make a profit on the dollars, but the Treasury certainly does. It's called seigniorage. And I've gotten presidential dollars in circulation. From a National Park, to be sure, but they were in circulation.
I've not received any in change. I'll spend some once in a while, most people are interested. At the local pharmacy the girl took my Washington dollars to the owner. After a few minutes the conference ended and she came back saying they decided to accept them. But she also said that she and the owner didn't know they were out in public yet. Circulated? Heck the brand new ones look circulated already. I think the mint has a last step process called the "beat up machine". They run the new dollar coins through this machine to give them character.
For all practical purposes these are not circulating coins. Many people do not know they exist, try asking noncoin coworkers, about 3/4 will just give you a confused look.
I don't know if that is true. My understanding was that the Mint charged face value for coins when ordered by banks in the Federal Reserve System.
I think Ruben's point is that since they turn over all profits to the General Fund and don't keep any - they don't make any.
I do get them in change.... Yes...I do get them in change at two places.... 1-Automated Postal Machines 2-Public Transportation Charlie Card Machines in Boston. The Post Office should use them primarily in their registers as well...but I think they continue to order notes from the bank. I use easy pass on the highway. Do toll booths distribute bills or coins as change?
i was in Washington DC over memorial day and was all over town and didn't receive one in change . ii also never asked for one.
When the GW dollar came out I looked through [4 rolls] $100 worth. Out of a hundred coins there were only 5 worth keeping. 95 of them were scratched, dinged, scraped, nicked and junky. So with the Adams dollar I only opened one roll and they were the same banged up junk.
I used to use them to buy lunch... I get a roll on Friday and use it all week... I can eat at Subway for just under 5 GWs a day... But the last few months, none of the banks around here seem to have any of them... When I ask, their replies always seem a bit snide... It seems like they hate it when people even ask... Not sure what thats about....
This is your typical coin collector hatred. This syndrome is mostly found among lazy female tellers who know nothing about coins.
