I live in nj and just started coin roll hunting. My question is, are their certain banks (exampe, Wells fargo, citi, b.o.a etc.) That you guys have found are better at giving out the best rolls? Ive gone to a couple diff banks asking for 1$ rolls and haven't gotten anything but the Sac's. And hardly any seem to carry half dollars.
Try to diversify. Don't just go to banks. You can pick up rolls from gas stations, grocery stores and 7/11's. I even got lucky at a liquor ones. I got a complete roll of random wheat penny's someone must have used to buy a pint of something.
You might try this question over the the coin roll hunting area, as there are several threads already there dealing with question and lots of people who can answer you. That said, most banks have to order halves, they don't usually stock them. Same is true for large dollars (Ikes) but a lot of banks can't get Ikes or won't even try. Also, the big banks you mention are much less likely to accommodate you. They are not service oriented. Try the smaller local banks and credit unions. They tend to be more service oriented and some will help with things like special orders for halves. Note, usually you have to order halves $500 or $1,000 at a time.
Yeah, I heard buying atleast 500 is the way to go for halves and dollars. I might have to start off with smaller denomination coins to see if I could get lucky.
If you have $500, buy a box of halves. You can search, and then reroll the coins and return them to the bank. In fact, if your bank has a coin counter with no fee, you don't have to reroll. Be sure that you don't dump at the same bank that you get the coins at. They don't like that.
