I chuckled at the idea of 44 being the IQ of the person who defaced the coin, but I wonder - if someone had an IQ of 44, would they have the mental acuity to write the number 44? At any rate, graffiti on coins is as old as coins. In the world of ancients, you find many examples.
Proofpositive the herd really needs thinning, just watch the fools destroying the marble statues overseas/the world's greatest artworks/ect.
If coins could talk...........if I could read minds........if I could pick the numbers on the lottery.........dream on...........
why would someone do that? In the legendary words of one of the Fathers of error collecting... "I don't know. I wasn't there." lol
Yes, but that's different. There's an ideology behind that destruction, misguided and deplorable as it is. Graffiti on coins is just that - graffiti. Bob was here. As another poster noted, the OP dollar was only worth a dollar when it was defaced, especially if we take 44 to mean 1944. Likewise, many of the ancient coins we consider valuable cultural artifacts today weren't that valuable to their ancient owners. It's no great act of vandalism to carve your initials on a dollar.
