Hello. I've just tried my new digital camera Sony DSG - W510 and shot an uncleaned silver coin of Alexander The Great. Hope I'm doing well as a beginner in digital photography. Thanks for your comments. DSC00020.JPG DSC00022.JPG

    It's a good start :)

It is out of focus though. That can be caused by a few things, primarily:

    - camera not held perfectly still (a camera stand helps for this problem)
    - camera too close to the coin

I'll try to improve on. BTW..Do you advise me to soak this coin in distilled water as a first step of cleaning?

I doubt water will do anything but it won't hurt the coin. That looks like tarnish or horn silver, neither of which will come off in a water soak.

There is nothing wrong with leaving the coin as-is :)

awesome on a new camera 7C! how many pics did you take? i'll take about 7 or 8 shots per side, and then usually i'll get one that is in good focus.

Sometimes I take dozens of shots per side just to get a good one! There are so many variables-- lighting, shutter speed, etc. Sometimes I can shoot great pictures one day and despite using identical settings, seemingly identical lighting, and similar coins, the results are not the same the next time I try.

I've taken more than a hundred pictures of many individual coins over various days/weeks/months, sometimes without being satisfied with any.

My routine has become a bit tighter lately and I usually don't have to shoot so many.
