Appreciating the artwork...

I normally don't stray much from the US Coins sections here, but I do find some of the paper money threads interesting, especially when I can appreciate the artwork of some of the older bills.

If I wanted to get a couple samples of US currency to add to my collection that are reasonably priced (under $100) and demonstrate some of the great art of our earlier bills, what might be some items I could start looking for? For example I've seen the $10 Bison posted here before, but know that's way out of my range... still, it's a beautiful bill.

    Any suggestions are welcome...

Under $100 will be a HUGE challenge.
Maybe you should consider souvenir cards.

Even though I own a great example of this note, I also love and collect souvenir cards with intaglio printings of the original engravings.....and they are a LOT LESS than the note.

I certainly understand the 10 dollar Bison is not something I can realistically get... Just wondering if there are other examples of outstanding artwork that are more affordable...

Not in a large size BEP bill, unless you are willing to take something worn and/or damaged. But that takes away from the beauty you are trying to obtain. Steve has the best solution with the intaglio prints. Those can be had as full size prints with perfect details and in color.

Just remember, none of those notes were printed by our government. The majority were printed by the American or National Bank Note Company. If he wants U.S. notes printed by the government (BEP), the Educational Series is known for it's beautiful engraving.

I got a good scan of this $5 Educational note and printed it out larger (about a foot wide) and put it in a frame for my office so I can look at it all the time... It's such a beautiful note

I have to agree with Steve on souvenir cards. These are printed by the Bureau of Engraving & Printing, sometimes from the very plates used to print the original currency. They show off the engraver's art extremely well and make notes affordable that most collectors could only dream of.
