I've had a First Tetrarchy argenteus on the want list for awhile, so when my bid for one that I really wanted got scotched in a recent auction, I decided to settle for this one. Even though it was my s̶e̶c̶o̶n̶d̶ third choice, now that it's been delivered, I'm more than pleased with it, and almost totally over the one that got away . The tactile pleasure of having a well-centered, problem-free piece of a silver in hand is just hard to argue with, and the striking flow lines and medium-dark field toning of this particular piece just adds to its eye appeal for me. As usual, please feel free to share any related coins you may have . GALERIUS, as Caesar AR Argenteus 3.36g, 18.4mm Rome mint, circa AD 295-297 RIC 35b O: MAXIMIANVS CAES, laureate head right. R: PROVIDENTIA AVGG, the four Tetrarchs sacrificing over tripod before city enclosure; gamma in exergue.
Huge congrats 'Z' !!! I absolutely LOVE that coin!!! Silver with a fantastic reverse that I've been after for a while and the centering and details are terrific!! I only have one siliqua of Honorius, but I'll post my 'other' bronze follis of Galerius and his wife Galeria Valeria (pardon the size, but after cropping it and a switch to WIN10, I seem 'stuck' with the dimensions for now
Thanks, Mikey. You did a spouse-swap there and paired Galeria with Maximinus II . Nevertheless, nice coins!
Crap LOL..... I switched several coins around on my photo library when i upgraded the computer and Windows....that's two already, now I have to go back and review them all over again!! Not to harp on this and 'steal' the thread but... I believe this is correct since this is a follis of Nicomedia with Galerius as Caesar and one of the first I purchased decades ago---the precise attributions seem to have been misplaced.. Guys, have I misidentified this all these years?? Well, back to wildwinds for me....
I'll put it in Steve's style. I don't have Galerius Argentius but I have his wife.. She's Galeria and was struck in Serdica.
Nice. I like argentei very much, have already two, but would love to get one for each of the tetrachs... Q
Very nice Z. I have a Maximianus with the four Tetrarchs, but it's chipped: MAXIMIANUS AR Argenteus OBVERSE: MAXIMIANVS AVG, laureate head right REVERSE: VIRTVS MILITVM, four tetrarchs sacrificing before walls with 6 turrets Struck at Ticinum, 295 AD 2.6g, 18mm RIC VI 18b
First and second choice were real standouts, but would've cost at least three times more to win. Let's hear it for third choices !
cool coin Z, a denomination i don't have. it's a killer reverse with the tetrachs. here's the closest thing i have.... Galerius as caesar, 293 – 305 AD, Æ Follis GAL VAL MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES Laureate head r. Rev. GENIO POPV – LI ROMANI Genius standing l., with modius on head and naked but for chlamys , holding patera and cornucopiae; S in r. field, D in l. field, ANT In exergue, Antioch, 28 mm, 9.9g, RIC 53b.
Thanks for the kind words Z. Here are the Constantius you're referring to, followed by a Diocletian. I used to have a Maximianus too but parted with it a few years ago (it's now in a good home at a friend of mine's) Constantius, Argenteus Antioch mint, 8th officina, c. Awesome OP addition, Z-Bro (wow, congrats) Sadly, I don't have an Argenteus example ... they are very slick (I need to put one of these babies atop my wish-list)
