Mother Nature or Mint ?

    I was rummaging around the other day and came across this large cent. I never really looked at it closely. I tend to think it is laminated on rev, but what is going on with the obv?

    Environmental damage is my guess, but I will defer to the experts.

    So, if this were a detector find, then the copper would bond with other minerals and/or whatnot then oxidize and flake / chip off?
