Hey @GoldFinger1969, get this... While you, a saint guy, is switching over to morgans and vams. I, the morgan and vam guy just bought my first saint. Where's Alanis Morissette, the irony is thick
Thanks for the reply. Glad to hear they don't all have the broken R. And if it's a rare feature for a '79-S Rev '78... woo hoo! Wish mine graded higher. One is VF25, the other VF35. At least they have the patina I like:
Ugh. Eyes are bleeding. I am tentatively (very tentatively) settled upon it as one of the VAM-34's (there are three die state variants), probably 34 or 34a as the initial doesn't seem polished. Grab your loupe, start here and see what you think: http://www.vamworld.com/1879s+rev+78 My opinion is based on the shape of the "r" and the top parts of the tailfeathers, as well as the look of the "engraved wing" these are so diabolically known for.
SuperDave, thank you! Link doesn't work, but I found the page easily enough. I see the "engraved wing" on both my coins. (For comparison I have a 3rd 1879-S... an MS64 Rev of '79). VERY helpful to start at VAM-34. But on my coin pictured above, I don't see the triple diagonal polishing lines in the lower part of T in LIBERTY. (They are clearly visible on my 2nd coin, not pictured.) This is going to take some study. I'm new to Morgan VAMs. But I've got some experience with Bust halves. Fun stuff -- especially if I discover my coins are more rare than I thought!
Reading this thread the last few minutes, I feel like a 6-year old kid going from simple addition to calculus !!
That's what Morgan collecting is like for some. The huge amount of information possible attracts those drawn to errors and varieties like flies. Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Jerry it's one of the ones that was lying around here . I've have had it awhile . At one time I had rolls of Morgan dollars .
Notice it said one time there were.....not any longer! I still have some but not like I did at one time. BTW the fish biting yet?
