Curious about this find

    my guess is something on the coin? Was it in a bag or something?

    What year is the coin? Maybe dipped in something (glue, lacquer)?

    It's a '74-D and there's nothing on the coin, the areas are below surface level

    My first thought was some type of lamination.

    Looks like a strike-through.
    My best guess is a piece of cloth.

    I'm with Frank. It appears to be a very large strikethrough of grease and debris.

    I'm pretty sure glue is not involved, unless you mean on the dies. The areas in question are recessed into the coins surface

    Is there any peeling anywhere on the coin?

    There is a prominent radial die break, a true radial since it goes through the center of the coin, and other die cracks.

    I don't find any peeling at all or any sign of a layer that may be separating

    Struck thru metal debris field(metal shavings)?
    Struck thru it,s own delam?
