I was attracted to this coin for various reasons, namely the "High Roman" style of the busts and the overall excellent detail, not to mention the beautiful even patina, no tooling or smoothing etc. It appears to me that the obverse is weakly struck at the letters DIVIF, but they are there, in a faint outline - this image just doesn't capture them. Maybe a strike-through, or maybe a flan anomaly? The one thing that concerned me about this coin was that there are some minor cracks and pitting, which don't appear to break the patina, but it's always a concern when it comes to BD. The previous owner says he's had the coin for 10 years and it's never evinced any problems. But he lives in an arid clime, so as a precaution I've treated it with Verdi Care and I'm letting it sit on top of my desk to see if it reacts unfavorably with our humidity. Any opinions welcome...
I agree that these seem prone to BD but see nothing especially worrisome about your coin. I would not leave it on your desktop though. Why risk initiating a problem? I'd store it in a humidity-controlled environment like any other bronze coin and check it occasionally.
I think that's a fabulous coin JA... I'd take it in a heartbeat!! Such terrific centering, stunning details-----all with a wonderful patina!!!
This has many more good point than bad. I suspect it was cleaned manually to remove corrosion at obverse bottom and polished. The centering is very good. The croc nose is always on the border on the dies of this late variation (PP on obverse). It has a great chain! Finding these with clear chains is not always easy. The rostral crown on Agrippa is small but present. Again this is a detail lost to many. The portraits are equally well struck. Most have one better than the other. I would classify it as a keeper.
I love the obverse on the OP coin. btw is the obv the portrait side on these? you know when you are out and you see a couple and you know they have just had an argument..... thats what these two look like. i just wish they would kiss and make up!!
They do like they just had a spat, lol, particularly because of Agrippa's rather stern countenance. "I do all the work, and you get the laurels, pfft."
Agrippa would have been the second Roman Emperor had Augustus not lived longer. He owed everything to supporting the right horse in that race. If Augustus had a problem it was that he outlived everyone he wanted as successor and was left with Tiberius.
