AJ - Your dad is an inspiration to any of us that got to know him. He made the discussion on currency related topics much more interesting. Most of the threads on coin talk are just showing what someone has bought. Your dad likes to explore the history behind the note. We miss having him around!

And getting back on topic, I finally picked up the third and hardest variety of Brewer's Permit taxpaid stamps, series 1878. This is a scruffy used example, as most used copies are, but I'm happy to have it. The other two are unused remainders, series 1872 and 1875.

Here's a couple more modern special tax stamps that sold recently on eBay for crazy money -- and I wasn't even bidding. You don't see them often, hence the frenzy when they surface. The "Laboratory Using Opium, Coca Leaves, Etc." went for $226 and the "Importer, Manufacturer, Or Compounder of Marihuana" brought $721.

Oh, and these two went for $393 (Stills) and a whopping $798 (Lab Marihuana)!

GSA, I may have posted this before, but since your topic has veered a bit in this direction, I'll put up my modern (~1990's) marihuana tax stamp. This is printed in black on silver foil and was purchased directly from the state of TX.

Here in Oregon that's around the low-end cost of the actual product. Or so I've read.

Quick a striking stamp -- what was it applied to?

That one is new, not stuck on anything, but I think the idea was that if I were to sell marijuana, I should buy these to pay the appropriate taxes, and stick them on the package. Even though it was illegal to sell, at least I wouldn't be charged with tax evasion.

What would those two guy's be smoking that was common enough to be included on the Brewer's Permit?

During the eighties, I was able to acquire marihuana tax stamps from several States. I post 'em when I find them.

I pulled out a couple full sheets of special tax stamps, rolled up in a tube I don't often look at. These remainders are pretty common as singles, but you don't often see them in multiples like this.

Every so often, I like to go back and revisit some of my old threads. One thing I didn't mention that ties into this topic are Beer Stamps. These were also printed by the BEP and most are just under 3" square.

Getting ready to sell some of my collection. Here are a few of the more obscure 20th century ones.
