Sorry to say, but my money would be on either falling in a hole somewhere or stumbling across something like drug smugglers and "disappearing" the old fashioned way. Alternatively, since they found his raft on the banks of the river, maybe he simply slipped, hit his head, and his body carried off downstream.

 

There's different kinds of "treasure." The poem reminds me of this.

Tons of gold sounds real good, but I like the music and the song.
