It's the same in many countries, including Russia. If you find antique coins or other material, you are required to turn them over to the government. You may get compensated for what you find, but it will be only a fraction of what the items are worth.

I love how Russians obey the law...almost as much as Americans (sarcasm alert, I really mean the opposite).

To return back to the topic - just return the "coins" and ask for your money back. If the seller refuses, file a complain with ebay and mention that they are counterfeits. At least ebay does not tolerate counterfeits too well and will side with you if you write good explaination of why they are not genuine.

The best advice with collecting is do not just collect coins with purely the intention of investment. If you do not know how to look after coins, not only will you see your value of coins drop immediately; you will not know how to enjoy collecting.

Some of the best sources for new collectors are large group lots sold off by the auction houses (Heritage, Stack's, etc.) that contain coins too cheap to warrant grading, but are never the less inspected by very knowledgeable folks at the auctions houses prior to inclusion in one of their sales. Generally, the lots have anywhere from a few dozen to 75 coins, and are typically in 2x2 cardboard holders with pre-sale estimates of several thousand dollars for the entire lot, but with a very low opening bid. On the better graded Russian material, I can't think of a better time to buy than right now. Most of the softness in the market can be attributed to the drastic drop in the Rouble exchange rate, but that is something that happens almost predictably every 5 or 6 years. Only reason not to buy would be if you think oil prices will stay at $27 a barrel forever, which frankly, is not very likely.

It's unlawful in many parts of the United States as well, especially national parks which unfortunately probably contain some of the best undiscovered material out there.

Can you post a scan of it? Russian material is quite strong recently, not as strong as the blow-off top in 2008, but much better than might be expected.

Start a post in Coin Chat and post pictures if you can. It gets lost in these old threads.
