Some of you know about military challenge coins, some of you don't. But basically in the military, for doing something great or worthy of recognition sometimes someone high ranking or affiliated with an agency you have helped out with will recognize you with a challenge coin. Many people in the military collect them during their careers to show that they are more than just another face in the crowd. This coin, which I didn't expect was given to me by a colonel just yesterday. I had helped two gentlemen from the Defense Advanced Reseach Projects Agency and discussed some technical issues regarding a project of theirs during a training flight in late January. Afterwards, I thought nothing of it. And yesterday boom, there it is.
An interesting multi-service piece. :thumb: There was a lengthy and interesting thread about the origin and history of these challenge coins a while back, but I can't seem to locate it. Perhaps it was in another forum. Here are links to two recent threads on the subject. One and two.

I spent four years in the Navy and never heard of these. sounds like treats for office clerks. Just kidding. really though, never heard of them.

I've only been in since the mid 90's, I don't really know much about the history of challenge coins, except for my experiences, but I know that they don't get handed out a lot. In my many years I have only managed to garner about 14
I guess being stationed in Puerto Rico (Roosevelt Roads), I spent too much time trying to learn Spanish and earning college credits, and not enough time partcipating in military things. Thanks for knowledge.
