after reading a couple threads on here over the past couple months discussing NGC *star and plus coins I jumped on eBay and found this baby with the green bean already on. iPhone pics of coin in hand. $150 shipped...probably I paid too much but I'm happy with her. This is my first crescent toner also. So let's see some NGC *star coin's...post them if you got them
I bought this one because I was looking for "*" coins. IMO, undergraded and it has great mirrors, which is the reason it got the "*".
BTW, since I needed to add a "Helga" V Nickel to my Type Set, I'm so happy it's a "*". This one has great eye appeal.
The contrasts are more pronounced on this in hand, and it has a thicker frost/contrasts than is typical for designated cameos in the series. In hand, the reverse approaches ultra cameo with the obverse doing the same but less so. 1939 NGC PF67* CAMEO
I don't have much interest in post-1964, but that is one of the most unusually attractive coins I've laid eyes on.
The * is NGC's equaivlent to PCGS's +, right ? You know...with grading being so subjective already, I really think it's strange they would then give out these 1/2-way indicators to show really good for the grade. I think the fact that there have been tests with other professional graders who are off (high and low) by 1-2 grades (sometimes more) on TPG rated coins that I'd settle for them spending more time per coin and getting the main grade right rather than finagling about a * or + indication. Rant off...... P.S. All are very nice coins !
No, a coin will get a STAR for exceptional eye-appeal/toning and a PLUS when it's high-end for its grade. Proof coins can receive a star if they have "some" cameo contrast, but don't fully qualify for the cameo designation. See https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-grading/scale-designations/plus-star.aspx
Just picked up my first * coin by total accident really. Seller pics. I'm expecting a new, professional photograph any day.
