Hey Roy, I wanted to ask you a few questions. Can you tell me what city the Japanese Mint is located and do they offer a subscription program like the U.S. Mint does? Is coin collecting as popular there as it is here in the U.S.? Just wondering.
The main mint is in Osaka, and there is a branch mint in Tokyo. No mint marks are used, and they do not publicly announce individual mintage numbers. Non-Japanese buyers cannot purchase directly from the Mint. They have distributors in various countries (including the US) who are the only sources for commemoratives. I can't give comparative numbers, but the hobby is very popular in Japan, with about 25 pages of coin shop advertisements in the annual Japanese Numismatic Dealers Association catalogs. Prices for Japanese coins are on the high side. I've never paid much attention to US coins in Japanese shops, but they are present in significant numbers. I don't know enough about values to say whether the prices are high, low, or similar to US prices. They do not generally use the Sheldon scale, and classify coins either as heavily circulated, circulated, uncirculated and outstanding, or as top, bottom and middle (rough translation of their terms).
I purchase my annual coin sets, commemorative silver and silver American Eagles from the U.S. Mint. I have made some purchases of early 1990's modern commemoratives from eBay dealers. I went wild just before Christmas and bought two BIG bags full of foreign coins which can be lots of fun to sort through. Everything else for my collection comes from circulation, including when one of my friends sets sail on one of his numerous cruises to the Caribbean and he obtains $20-$50 worth of coins from banks and commerce. Most coins I purchased over the last ten years are from ebay (or Yahoo auctions -- now out of business). I buy modern coins from the mint. That's pretty much it.
