Figured I'd grab some shots of my danscos. Just a few more to go and I'll also probably get some raws to fill the slabbed holes too in due time

I saw an AG-3 1895-O pass on Heritage today for ~$100.

 

What, no 93-S or 95?

Nice variety of coins! I like 'em.

Just curious, is there any significance regarding why some of them are upside down in the album (like to denote a certain characteristic), or is it just personal preference?

 

Are you concerned with coin oxidation for those open air Morgans?

 

I wouldn't be. Most are circulated and will be fine for at least another hundred years.

I knew I'd get this question lol.

These danscos were originally from a large lot of coins I inherited. There were only about 30 morgans in it. Then I added something like 20+ to it. Then, about 4-5 months ago I bought an almost complete set in old Whitman Books. I pulled the best for grading, then what I needed for my album (upside down ones) and sold off the rest. I really scored on that purchase with the graded coins coming back at grades that basically paid for that set. SO all the upside-down coins were free but if you wanna get technical though the way the set broke down I paid an average of $38 per coin for the upside-down ones

 

On a side note. I love how beat up the 82cc & 83cc are. You see so many of the darn things all sparkly in gsa holders so those cruddy ones really appeal to me. Call me crazy

 

I have really enjoyed collecting Morgan's just something about heavy dollars. I live near the old mint in Carson City and have purchased some not graded for the price. I mostly now collect using the guide book of Morgan Dollars by Dave Bowers. It is the best book I have found for note resting stories and details. His optimal collecting grade had helped me focus on my collection and enjoyment. From time to time I get carried away with slabbed CC Morgan's.

 

Nice, I get up there every year or two. My family has a cabin in Tahoe. Be sure to go across the street from the mint to Northern Nevada Coin if you haven't already and feast your eyes on the beauty also, if you haven't already Google "Laverne Redfield hoard" and read up. He was an eccentric rich guy that hated the government and hoarded silver dollars in his modest house in Tahoe. He was worth millions but dressed disheveled and drove a beat up truck. He would trade cash for bags of morgans just to throw them down his laundry shoot. He left a note to his heirs with the coins that said "don't tell the irs about this" (ad lib) and guess who found the note... the irs! It's a great story especially if you collect morgans and live in the area

 

Thanks and I am a regular customer at the three locations of N Nevada coin. Just last week I purchased two Morgan's there both ms 65. I am going back on March 5th for a few more.
This last time I even purchased a few silver Eagles. Fun gifts.

Great story to go along with a great collection. Sounds like one of those opportunities that doesn't come around frequently, unless you're a full-time dealer.

BTW, I also like your circulated CC's. The whole set definitely has the look of a lovingly upgraded group. Just out of curiosity, what grade is your 89-CC?

 

That still really doesn't answer the question. Now I know where you acquired the coins from, but why leave them upside down? Did you do it so you could differentiate where the coins came from or for a different reason?

Thanks but I don't buy from heritage unless I spend over $1500 on an auction as I hate paying sales tax

 

I am a Morgan collector, but never have bought one from Northern Nevada Coin though they seem to have a grand selection. I did buy a pre-war Jefferson nickel proof from them on EBay. Quite happy with the coin and the price.
