I store mine in 2 x 2 coin-holders (staple type - for easy removal) with all of the details printed on a 2x2 piece of paper which locates in front of the coin, in 'cutlery' drawer inserts (260mm x 300mm). This way I get (up to) 350 coins per tray, and they all fit into the safe I bought for the purpose. Note: I also load the safe with re-usable dessicant.
Since I view these as art and try to collect fewer but higher quality issues, I am able to affordably house mine in Abafil cases. They are small enough to store anywhere. The 12 spot cases are about $100. So are the 20 and 35 space cases. MINI-DIPLOMAT "1" Exterior dimensions: 9-1/2 x 7-1/8 x 1" with one built-in tray 113 Case with 35 spaces (1 x 1) $99 114 Case with 20 spaces (1-3/8 x 1-3/8) $99 115 Case with 12 spaces (2-1/8 x 2-1/8): Fits standard 2 x 2 flippette $99 Even if I collected $80 denarii, I would think $3 per slot is a small cost, to show a coin. I have changed things out since this photo, but this is what I aim for.
I think that this hits that nail right on the head. Stuff that I care about gets housed decently, the rubbish I struggle with. Actually I had just come to this decision by myself and had chucked away the last few remaining soaking coins that I was 'cleaning'. I now just need to man up and chuck the cleaned slugs I also have!
My better coins are in Saflips in an Abafil mini diplomat case. The rest are in Saflips in a red box.
I store my coins somewhat obsessively to avoid accelerated toning for the most part. I use Lighthouse's Quickslabs, which can be opened to handle coins at will, but nicely prevent them from moving around (and are thick enough to store most tetradrachms/sestertii). I then put more sensitive coins in a Lighthouse Intercept box, and then use a rechargeable desiccant to remove moisture. I don't recommend this for everyone but it works for me. I previously used trays and Abafil cases but found myself not flipping over coins often enough. Now, I can view both sides very easily without fearing imparting wear (especially on high grade aurei which are more sensitive than other types).
I use lighthouse's MB series trays, they are ok. One issue is they don't seemed to have the 80 slot option (24mm square) that's available under leuchtturm. This is actually kinda annoying if you collect denarius or drachm, since the closest size available through lighthouse is 19mm and some coins won't fit. Next size up is 48 squares each 28mm max diameter, a lot of loose space.
Keep in mind that for some of us collectors, there is a difference between displaying coins vs. storing them. I store mine in Quickslabs, with a rechargeable desiccant, but when I want to display them I put them in 2" x 2" flips with a label, in an Abafil case:
I store mine in an Abafil case and trays, too, but not in holders. I print labels and place the "raw" coins on top of them, which makes for easy viewing and display.
Abafil is the best for me. Got around to shooting a pic. I print tags with all the information. My new tags include provenance (the old ones do not) and I print on both sides of the tag so there is room for all the information:
Coincidentally Ed just got a new order and they seem to have gotten a bit broader with their colors. A few selections in dark blue and a dark green. Silver on blue..........sounds quite nice. Bronzes on green, sublime. Sadly only trays and the Diplomats for that, no mini-diplomats.... http://coin.com/cases/ btw I am not pimpin for Ed, but I have been waiting 3 months for this order to come in, since I have a tray on back order and this topic is live at the moment.
I have a simple storage method: 2x2 cardboard flips stored in coin boxes in a bank deposit box. The coins are arranged first by emperor and then by RIC/RPC number.
